Earth To TSN, Come In, TSN...

Well, thought I had heard everything you could ever imagine, until this afternoon.

The 5:55 PM newscast was missing an anchor! The actualities and other reporters' stories could be heard, but it was dead silence elsewhere. Is Ed running the ship again?

Oooops! Sounds like a human actually was a fault or something eh? Believe it or not, humans from time to time get goofed up, locked out, or have an extended potty break that can cause just such a thing to happen. Nothing, including the humans can be totally perfect.

But that seems rather odd, because one actualitiy and another reporter's story ran, with dead silence before the first actuality and again in between that item and the next one. Those things don't start by themselves...

Hi Robert..

I didn't pay much attention to the fact it was you in the previous joking response. I now realize you were seriously questioning why there was no anchor but all the rest of the elements were present. Could it be that they have their digital delivery system set up with all the elements including dead-air carts in place strickly timed so that all the guy has to do is pop open the mic and talk normally? If he wasn't there or there was a mic malfunction the computer system would continue to play out the rest of the elements without regard to the missing anchor voice.

sounds like everything was working properly but the anchors mic got knocked out of program somehow therefore not easily spotted by boardop or host.

I heard this happen once before and as I understand it, it was a console issue, in other words, one feed sends down the line to the network and one is what they hear in their headset...I'm sure they were there DOING the newscast and firing off the actualities and such, but the microphone was not feeding to the network. The anchor probably was hearing it perfectly not aware it was not going out.

It's inexcusable of course, someone in the building SHOULD be monitoring to be certain that it is going out...and the air talent SHOULD have a "pre-flight checklist" to be CERTAIN everything is set up properly before going on the air. I'm guessing they do but someone did not execute it.

Is he the one who would on occassion let a cart fly down the hall?

I think a call -vs- a post would have solved the problem quickly and more efficiently. I am trying to think where it was I learned "When you have a problem, do not call your Supervisor, Engineer or Manager first, but immediately post it on the Radio-Info board."

Next time, try this:

While that is good advice, this was not intended to be an official report of a problem from the station's standpoint. It was merely me making a personal observation. It only became a problem because of what appears to be misinterpretation.

I have said many positive things about TSN on this board. It is not my desire or intent to ridicule the network. I would also remind everyone that in spite of my personal remarks on this board, the station repeatedly thanked TSN for the rights to broadcast the playoff football game later that evening.

So in my opinion, TSN owes KEOM an apology on behalf of their actions. As I have pointed out many times before, there is fine print at the bottom of RI’s page that clearly states posts on the board are the opinion of the poster, and I voluntarily posted the disclaimer as an act of good faith.

Now IF I had signed the original post as an official statement from the station, by posting the station’s call letters and my title, that would indeed warrant the need to contact KEOM regarding this matter.

Respectfully,

R

Folks,

Holstead's first paragraph is essentially a dead accurate description of how this whole thing is being treated, so let's not joke about it.

Thanks,

R

No, by all means this is no laughing matter. No nincompoop would run to a message board and start tossing out names of people without MAKING SURE THEY WERE AT FAULT. So by now I am guessing you got to the bottom of this serious matter. When you called TSN and asked what happened, what did they tell you? Did they fire Ed?

It appears to me you are missing the point that this was never intended to be an official report of a problem. It was a personal observation that I was sharing.

Again I reiterate that I did not intend this to be an official problem report, and I did not sign the original post with my title and the stations call letters, and as such I was not speaking on behalf of KEOM. If I had wanted to officially report the problem I would have called TSN directly, and I would not have tried doing that here.

As far as "Ed" goes, I am not personally interested in what they might have or have not done with him, because I don't even know if he was the anchor on duty at TSN, at that particular time. Do you see me stating that I knew for a fact he was? If so, please explain.

Once again, these are my opinions only, and they do not necessarily reflect the views of KEOM or the Mesquite Schools.

The temptation to make fun of a mistake by KRLD/TSN-CBS Radio must've just been too great to turn down.

Really! I have to restrain myself constantly!

Ya know, for a bunch of dried-up, bitter old radio hacks and wanna-be's and know-nothings as we're all supposed to be, CBS sure does give this board a lot of credence. Who'da ever thought we'd be so damn powerful?!? ;D
