EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI-BIG CITY 101.3

I know most of you does not like the fact that there are so many pirate radio stations in Boston, and I understand why.

But, I was listenning this morning on my way to work, they were discussing about that sad story there. These are the types of stations that cares for their listenners in that way. What other Boston stations take calls for ??? a half hour talking about this situation and care for their listenners like that?

@Radio Management, this is why there needs to be this type of format in Boston like W I L D 1090/97.7 was.
92.9 is the most clearest signal in and around the city of Boston, they have the best signal for an Urban AC station, if not Urban AC station, at least change it to an AC station (but focus more on More new Urban AC music)
There are many Rock and Roll stations in Boston.

I know people don't like what I say here, but that is your thoughts.

I mean no harm, I don't intend to say bad, I try to say good, and try to do good.

I respect Big City 101.3 for what I heard this morning.

Thank you Big city 101 . Urban A/C format stations is not alway about R&B Music. MLK day is a few days away and how many Boston legal radio stations are going to talk about MLK and his days here in Boston ? Alot of Young People in this area dont know MLK went to B.U. 97.7 was the perfect FM signal for Urban A/C format in Boston and Radio One F it up ( urban radio specialist yeah right ). Is it that hard for Radio One, to put on one local show on AM 1090 ? My thoughts and prayers go out to Haiti and over 80,000 Haitan People in MA ( and Worldwide ).

You guys make a good point and this is an excellent argument in favor of low-power FM stations. If only those licenses would go out to community-oriented owners who serve their audience as these folks are. I just hope that, when we finally see LPFM licenses granted en masse, they don't just go out to a bunch of religious entities who will further spam the dial with a bunch of prostyletizing that nobody asked for.

These pirate stations provide good models for the kinds of formats and services that the LPFM concept is supposed to provide.

There's no question in my mind that the Haitian community in Boston is large enough to deserve something on the radio that's geared to them. I know because I used to fly often Boston-San Juan, which continued to Haiti. Half of that plane was always filled with Boston-area Haitians going home to visit relatives. It's a large community that needs support right now, so kudos to Big City 101.3 (even though I do not condone breaking the law) for doing that.

As for the people of Haiti, may God bless those poor souls. Disastrously bad situation there.

On the LEGAL side, I know it's only one weekly block, but WMBR 88.1 FM from MIT has two Haitian programs back-to-back on Sunday mornings from 6-10 AM, "Compas Sur FM" and "Haiti Focus".

WMBR does not subscribe to PPM Arbitron ratings, but the last time I saw their old diary ratings breakdown a few years ago, those two shows got the highest ratings for WMBR for the entire week.

NPR is running some thing about Planete Compas being rebroadcast in Haiti.. since the major stations are knocked out

Today's Globe mentions that local Haitian radio stations are helping out w/ news, etc.; they said they were weak unlicensed stations and mentioned that one didn't want their call letters (note: only FCC call letters are legitimate of course) or location given since they are on the air without permission. Well I'm glad they're helping the community in that respect but they are still illegal...

I thought, wouldn't it be nice if someone, perhaps even the city, were to get a license for, say, an expanded band AM station that would have programs dedicated to various communities like this? Then I thought, actually there are some stations who will give--or broker--air time, on both AM and FM. As an example, as I type this, WMWM has its long-standing Hispanic programming on. On a legal station.

With a disaster of this magnitude a brokered deal would just leave people hanging. I am glad there are Haitian pirates now. I do work for a Haitian non-comm in NJ and they are devastated. This is there 9/11 the difference is they aren't able to get information out of teh country. Many are still waiting to hear about family members.

On weekdays I work at a Hospital, many of the General Service (Security, Housekeeping and Patient Transport) workers are Hatian. One guy who work in Patient Transport lost five family members. The manager came in late Friday afternoon to tell us this and that his department was shortstaffed sue to this sad news. That manager is also Hatian.

It's sad for them for this, my heart and prayers goes out to them

It makes me very sad that a major station (Greater Media, Clear Channel, Entercom...) why don't they just change their format, if not to an Urban AC, then change it to AC, but focus on more Urban AC music, and have at least an morning talk show for the African American community (example: Jimmy Myers, or T Clark and Coach Willie Mae) (@Rapking, yes, 97.7 was a great station, but (ANY) walkman I use (New and Old) walkman, I can not get these station in Boston (93.7, 94.5, 97.7, 98.5, 99.1, 102.5 and 103.3 to name a few) I can not get those stations in (Cambridge, East Boston, North End, Downtown Boston, Comm Ave Boston, Southend, Roxbury, Brookline, and parts of Dorchester) No matter what Walkman I use, NEW or Old, no matter on DX or Local, I can not get those stations at all INSIDE Boston area and those cities I mentioned. Some parts of Somerville and Medford I can not get 93.7 and 97.7 and 103.3, and Jamn 94.5.
It may or may not be the same if you live in those areas, or driving listenning from a Car Radio
***Once I get outside the city, I pick those stations up faily good***

That's why I say, 92.9 has the best signal coverage both inside all those cities throughout Boston and outside Boston, as well as Magic 106.7

We already have many stations in Boston that play Rock and Roll (New and old) on 92.9, 93.7, 97.7, 101.7, 104.1 and 107.3
There are NO Real Major Radio station in Boston that plays NEW Ruben Studdard Music, NEW Boyz To Men Music, NEW Lionel Richie music, NEW Changing Faces Music, There are NO Major Radio Stations in Boston that focuses on Urban AC music.
Yes, you have Magic 106.7, and Mix 104.1. Why not make one of them that focus more on New Urban AC music. Or change 92.9 to a Soft Hits format but focus more on Urban AC music.

No one ever listen to me and always get mad at me

I mean no harm to no one, all I'm saying to Radio Management is Focus on more Urban AC music. I'm not saying fire anyone, just change things, don't fear, just change the music. This is 2010. Do something other than sitting on your A$% and do some work and focus on this music

@Radio Management, go to those areas Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan and see how many Pirate Radio stations there are that are Urban Caribbean and Urban AC. They have these pirates because no real major radio station in Boston want to focus on this music.

Go out there in person, from person to person and ask what they want, ask what kind of music they like, what they want from a radio station

Please do something?

93.7 has "Funkytown" on their HD 2 station. Why not switch it to 93.7, and get a stronger signal throughout inside Boston and all those cities that I mentioned.

If you don't beleave me here, go and try yourselves

Take a bus and train, use a Walkman, listen to those stations in all those cities that I mentioned by Walkman
EVERY Walkman I use, you can not get those stations inside Boston
@Radio Management, do something better about this

Why not change 93.7 to Funkytown, or change 92.9 to an AC format but both, focus more on Urban AC music

Rapking is right, Radio-One messed up Boston radio
Entercom should've kept Star 93.7
If Star 93.7 and W I L D 97.7 (and 1090am was like it was before with music and Radio Personalities) if they were still around, there wouldn't be that many Pirate Radio stations in Boston

if not change 93.7 or 92.9

Change 97.7 and strenghen their signal both inside Boston (all those cities that I mentioned) and outside Boston.

Outside Boston it comes in good (East Boston North=It start fading out past Beverly)

It comes in better Medford and beyond going west.

You can get it once you leave the city Brighton Center/Past Brookline Reseviore Train Station going west.

So if they can't change 93.7 or 92.9, then change 97.7 and strenghen their signal all throughout those parts of Boston. Radio Management has to do something. There are many great radio programs out there "Keith Sweat Hotel", "Your Weekend with Jim Brickman", "Hollywood Confidential", "Chill with Mindi Abair" and "Walt Baby Love Countdown" just to name a few. So Radio Management has to do something to make Boston radio better

Funkytown is on WMKK-HD2 and online for anyone who really wishes to hear it. However I don't see what is so great about Funkytown, it seems to be very repetitive in the playlist and alot of song burnout.

Does "song burnout" really matter to the average radio listener? Seems to me that most FM stations do just fine with 400-500-song playlists, and have been doing so for decades. Most of the deep-playlist crowd certainly must have migrated to satellite or Internet radio by now -- maybe it isn't that big a "crowd."

New Haitian pirate on 88.5 last night. At least I think it's new, I haven't heard it on the frequency before. Severe overmodulation and distortion.

LAUROJRM, Dana Hall is the editor of Radio-Info's "Urban First" newsletter. She just gave this thread a complimentary 'shout-out' in the latest edition (titled 'Board Buzz'). Hall also has some thoughts on Boston urban scene that she's quite familiar with. I'd check it out if I were you--and subscribe to the newsletter, just in case you hadn't.
