EAS defective equipment extension

Hi there:

Quick question: In your collective experiences, how often are requests filed for an extension of the 60 day grace period allowed to replace/repair defective EAS equipment? Our AM/FM receivers got zorched by lightning a couple weeks ago and, long story short, available cash is low, so I'm being told that I won't be getting the funding for new ones by our 60 day deadline unless absolutely necessary.

Thoughts about our financial situation aside, in your experiences, is it completely unheard of to submit a request to the District Director of our FCC Field Office asking for an extension? In the meantime I've rigged an AM tuner to monitor our LP-1 (and our NOAA weather receiver still works fine), so really we're only missing the LP-2.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your time,
Shaun

So, since your L2 is an FM can't you get a small radio for a monitor? I'm sure you can get a longer extension than the 60 days.Do you have a Cap complaint box? Did you have insurance on the unit?

Hi oldiesstation,

I can definitely hook up a small FM radio to monitor the LP-2, but I'm afraid that will turn from a temporary solution to a permanent one once management hears about it, to be honest. They're great and all, but when presented with an opportunity to save a few bucks, you might be able to imagine what would happen...

Although I'm ok with checking the tuning of the little analog radios every week or so to make sure they don't drift, this is a student-run station with a higher level of turnaround than you'd find at a "real" station, and I don't want to hand over an EAS system that requires constant attention to the next guy a couple years down the road...he may not be as diligent. Nor would I expect him to be...I just have nothing better to do ;) I'd like to have our EAS system as solid as possible, seeing at it's one of the most common reasons for NOVs. I've had our box CAP compliant since well before the deadline, also.

And we could file an insurance claim, but our deductible is much higher than it would cost to replace the receivers. We had some other equipment go down at the same time for (most likely) the same reason (our Omnia, backup tape drive/changer, elevator, etc.) so we're trying to lump it all together to see if we could file one big claim, but it still probably won't exceed our deductible.

Thanks for your thoughts! Much appreciated. I've been toying with the idea of just hooking up the headphone output of a FM radio...maybe I should just do it and not bother with the extension? I'm not sure which will create the least amount of hassle :)

What brand and age is the unit? Maybe you could contact the manufacturer , explain your situation and they might offer some help. One thing i like about the Sage Endec units is the buyer supplies the radios, which is easy.

Yikes!! So did you buy a cap converter to go with this box?? Not sure if Sage supports this box,but you might contact them.Might have an older box laying around.

You might check around fleabay or one of the broadast resellers like SCMS, Bohn, Lightner, etc. Lightner, Patton, J-squared, etc. might even be able to actually fix the old one for you. Some of these super-engineering guys can fix what the rest of us might give up on. Too bad it's not a Dayton Industrial tuner. They have a pretty reasonably priced repair service they offer on their stuff.
