EAS Fail on WSBB-FM

Around 5:40 PM today the EAS activated on WSBB-FM 95.5. We heard the tones and then about 20 seconds of static. Then the release tone.

Who is WSBB-FM monitoring? I assume it is not WSB-AM. If it is, they do not even have reception from their own station.

They would be monitoring their sister network, WSB-FM on 98.5.....who usually has no problem.
 
Isn't B98.5 the ATL EAS injection point? Is WSBB considered to be in the ATL market for EAS purposes?
 
The reason I asked who they were monitoring because I was not sure if they monitor Atlanta. Also, where would the EAS receiver be? Studio or transmitter?

Usually it is hardwired right before the audio processing, to keep station personal from messing with it. I have heard (I have not looked at the regulations for years so I could be wrong) that the FCC requires this unit to function (let the EAS "people" break in) no matter what the station is doing.

WSBB's EAS statues gets a little confusing, IIRC 97.1 is the "north of metro" EAS "injection point. 95.5 is on 97.1's tower but is monitoring 98.5.

Well, WSBB has a city of license of Doraville, while WSRV is still Gainesville.

It is almost like those old Emergency Action Notification that was set up so that the White House could activate it. Each station was assigned to broadcast information for a certain area. I remember when I worked at 1010 wins in the 80s and we had to be prepared to sound this sounder:

That is WCBS's. We would have to be prepared to broadcast for NYC and the Northern part of NJ. It is kind of the same thing. Even though WCBS and us at 1010 WINS were in the same building, we broadcast alerts for different areas.

Who put the old WGST traffic/weather sounder at 2:38? And the financial news sounder at 2:50? Did other stations use this sounder package? I guess they did...WGST used it from around 1977 well into the 90s...it might have gone out with Planet Radio.
 
I think I remember getting some kind of notice that 94.9 was now the "Primary" FM EAS for Atlanta. Maybe I'm wrong, but it might explain why if WSBB was monitoring 98.5 that they only had static. (BTW my EAS is set for 94.9 and we've been getting all the alerts, including the national one.)

I remember that when we had these old sounders at WCBS, we knew that other stations used them...I think WGST might have used them.

I remember hearing these sounders on WGST 92 in the 1970s when I was in elementary school (listening for school closings). When I got out of college and started getting into Rush and Boortz in the early 90s, WGST was still using them--at least the traffic and weather sounder, I think they had dumped the financial sounder by then.
