East Texas Radio Days

For those in the Longview/East Texas area, the Gregg County Historical Museum in downtown Longview is hosting an exhibit featuring a tribute to East Texas radio history from June 11 through July 9. The exhibit kicks off Saturday 6/11 at 1:00 PM featuring a roundtable discussion with the likes of H.A. "Tony" Bridge and Tom Perryman. The regular museum entrance fee is waved during this exhibit.

This has the potential to be a really good exhibit. I've loaned them quite a few radios, microphones and other broadcasting memorabilia. The response from other area broadcasters has been enthusiastic as well. If you can't make it for the grand opening on Saturday, at least try to drop by during the run of the exhibit. I think you'll enjoy it.

Well "Hayseed", I for one am looking forward to viewing the exhibit. I got my start into Broadcasting nearly 60 years ago right here at KLTI in Longview. I owe a lot to the pioneers who preceded me in this new medium of Radio. I worked there twice, once in 1953, as Radio Engineer, and again In 1956, as Chief Engineer. These exhibits will bring back lots of fond memories. Can't wait to take a lot of pictures.

This Saturday, from 12:30 until four (or maybe five) will be very interesting for those who want to hear stories from radio's past. It's a panel discussion with several East Texas radio legends. I spoke to both Tony Bridge and Tom Perryman today. They are really fired up to do this. It should be fun.

Best of all, it is free. Just be there this Saturday, June 11, at the Gregg County Historical Museum in Downtown Longview.

Saw that info in the News-Journal on line. Would love to be able to attend.
My interest in primarily in KLTI. I just posted a lengthy note on the subject via a different thread.
Glad to find all this. The story (mostly about KFRO) did, indeed, tweak my interest.
I visited the old KFRO studios a few times myself during LHS days. We used to have a program that I think was called Teen Time. That's where I first saw an AP teletype machine.
Some of my friends and I used to call KFRO's three directional towers "the three wise men."

Love to talk Longview radio. (I worked 3 summers at KLTI, '55,'56 & '57) I'm a fairly busy voice-over guy here in Nashville to this day.

Clem, I'm not allowed to have an opinion on this forum anymore. You may want to stop using my name or they will take away your freedom of speech, also.

I went today and had a great time. The videos from 6-11 are on youtube also just search for East Texas Radio Days. There was a jingle for KGRI done by Jim Reeves to the tume of He'll have to go. I would love to have a copy of that.

From what I understand, the exhibit has been a lot more popular than was ever expected. It has now been extended until August 9th.

Hi, I doubt that tune was from "He'll Have to go", Jim recorded that song in 1959, 7 years after he left KRGI.
May I recommend you visit the Jim Reeves Display at the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in Carthage?
You probaby will find that jingle being played there too.

Or you could play this Youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_dVj41tQDk&feature=player_embedded

According to the youtube clip Jim along with Tom Perryman bought KGRI in 1959.

Incidentally, the museum will be open late on Thursday July 28 in conjunction with Art-Walk Longview. The hours are 4-7:00 PM. The ArkLaTex Packard Club will be displaying some nifty Packards on Fredonia Street, in front of the museum. The QX-FM "Q-Mobile" will be there doing a remote broadcast and several merchants will be open late as well. If you haven’t visited East Texas Radio Days, this would be a good opportunity to do so. I hear that refreshments are involved, so a good time should be had by all....

I doubt that Jim Reeves' jingle is done to the tune of 'He'll have to go'. That song dates from the late 50's, not from sometime in 1950.
There's a Jim Reeves KRGI display in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame at Carthage. Someone posted a video clip of it on Youtube.

I'm sorry for the previous incomplete message, something went wrong.

Tom Perryman just mentioned in his 'Classic Country' radio program that Jim Reeves indeed recorded ba KRGI single to the tune of 'He'll Have To Go'. I love to have that jingle too....

Tom told me today that he will be at the ArtWalk Longview event on Thursday the 28th. He'll be inside the Gregg County Historical Museum's "Radio Days" exhibit. I suggest dropping by and getting the full story from "The Oracle." You can even pick up a copy of his book. ArtWalk is 4-7 PM This Thursday in downtown Longview.
