In a previous post, i reviewed the ratings for the Triangle & Triad area of
North Carolina, this time we'll give you our take on Wilmington, Fayetteville,
and Greenville/Washington/New Bern/Jacksonville.
First, let's analyze Wilmington.
Three stations had good numbers, including one whose tripled.
WWQQ reclaimed the top spot with a 10.6, while WKXB had their best
numbers ever at 8.4, but the station that surprised me was WKXS, which
changed formats in the fall of 2006 to "Classic Hits" and pick up "John
Boy & Billy" in early 2007, they earned a 6.4, but can they keep this
momentium into the Spring 2008 book?, In addition, WAZO(Z107.5)
was up to a 4.5., a strong showing for a CHR/Top 40.
As for other stations, WGNI slipped some, but WLTT/WNTB("The Big
Talker FM")fell from a 6.0 to a 4.2, and WILT("98.7, Will FM") dropped
to a 1.9, maybe they should consider trying another format.
Meanwhile, in the "Classic Rock" battle, 93.7 and 103.7 "The Bone"
edged out WRQR("Rock 104.5"), I thought after the disasterous
numbers in the Spring 2007 book, they would have changed, but
nothing can't be ruled out.
Others getting "so-so" ratings include WSFM("Surf 98.3")and WUIN
(106.7, "The Penguin") which has been sold to Sea-Comm and brings
up the question, will they keep the current format, or head into another
direction?, this will be interesting to watch.
On the AM side, WAAV had a reasonable 3.9, and WMFD did OK at 1.9.
Now let's review Greenville/Washington/New Bern/Jacksonville...
For many years, there has been one radio station that has dominated
the airwaves here, but in the last few books, their reign may be coming
to a end.
In three of the last five rating periods, WIKS("Kiss 102")has proven
themselves as #1 among listeners, they celebrated their 20th Anniversary
in 2007, and the Beasley Group must be very pleased with what they are
doing.
As for WRNS, they have fell to a 9.1, the air staff has changed some,
except for mornings, but NextMedia has to be concerned.
Taking a look at others, WSFL,WNCT and WMGV scored well, but the
combination of WNBB/WNBR had their best ratings ever, and has shown
there is a audience for "Classic Country", achieving a 5.2!
Also, i noticed WRHD/WRHT, better known as "Thunder Country" is
beginning to make some rumbles, coming up to a 4.0, i think WRNS
has competition!
While the others scored between 1.1. and 2.3, there are three other stations
in this market poised to improve their position, if not by the next book on
March 14th, but during "Phase 1" of the Spring ratings, their are WZUP
who just went 50,000 watts with a "Spanish" format, and WQZL/WQSL,
which switched recently to "Urban AC" featuring Steve Harvey weekday
mornings, and Micheal Baisden in the afternoon, in a post late last year,
i commented that they should go to this format, and did.
Finally, my take on Fayetteville...
There is no surprise that WZFX("Foxy 99")is still #1, and that WKML is
#2, but in third place is WUKS, with a respectable 7.5.
As for the others, WQSM("Q-98") did alright at 5.8, but WNNL("103.9
The Light")was very impressive coming in ahead of two heritage outlets
in this market at 5.3, up from a 3.7.
WFLB-FM and WFNC-AM tied for #6 at 4.8, and WCCG-FM did a 4.3.
The biggest drops here involved three Cumulus stations, WRCQ, which
went from a 4.8 to a 2.5, and WFVL/WFNC-FM("Oldies Radio") falling
to 1.8., i wonder if they will keep this format?, if not, i think they should
move the talk format from WFNC-AM to WFVL and continue to simulcast
this at 102.3, this would give them good coverage, as for AM 640, it could
switch to Sports.
That's my opinion, let's get yours.
