I remember when WPLM-AM & FM played big band and easy listening sounds around the town, as the late, lamented Steve H. Coleman used to say. He, along with Gary Collard, John Dyer & Rick Kiley made that station an easy listening powerhouse. Every Christmas, they'd have half hour blocks of Christmas songs with artists like Guy Lombardo, the New Christy Minstrels, Ray Conniff, Percy Faith & 101 Strings, to name a few. And each St. Patrick's Day, they'd play the old Dennis Day, Irish Rovers, and Clancy Brothers recordings from the time they came on the air at 6 a.m. until the time they went off at 1 a.m. (Midnight on Saturdays)
Oh, and there was a stretch in June 1978 when Steve Coleman tried a stern and angry tone when he was on the air. He sounded really harsh when he did the news, especially. I don't know why he did it, but his angry style turned me off for a time.
