Eating Sushi On The Kimmer Show

D

I now really have to admit it. I have listened to The Kimmer Show on 640 WGST for several years, and have probably been one of his heavier supporters. But today took the cake...

I was sitting in THE WORST traffic for 2+ hours on I-75 North this afternoon/evening/night, and all I heard on GST was Kimmer-and-crew taste-testing sushi on the air. You have got to be kidding me.

It had to be the most boring, disgusting-sounding (I don't really care to hear anyone smacking their lips and chewing/rating the taste and smell of raw fish), and "I ain't got nuthin'" shows I have ever heard them do.

I've been hanging in there for them, until now.

Lord oh lord, that was painful. I give...U N C L E ! ! !

I too have been a huge Kimmer fan for as long as he's been on GST, he makes the ride home fun. I have to say without Jim Gossett. and now Pete Davis, his show is sucking wind a bit. Maybe that's just what management wants, so they can point to lower ratings when they finally do can him. Too bad though, because I really do like the Kimmer.

He just needs something fresh. Maybe new writers or some fresh young blood to join the show - even behind the scene. Some new bits might help.

I've listened to Kim off and on since '94 and these days the Newsmaker Line is about all that makes me laugh. I hate saying that, but it's the truth. I don't want to see him go away, so I hope they can relight the fire the show once had and get us listening again.

with his crutches stripped away, you now see the nekkid truth ...no talent. Never had any to begin with. None. Painful to listen to. Truth is, Jim Gossett and Pete Davis extended his career by YEARS. It will be over soon.

Not all things are the same to all people. I think folks that like listening to The Kimmer do so because they find him entertaining. In the overall scheme of things Jim Gossett and Pete Davis were strong complements to the program. If folks listen to The Kimmer just for Jim and Pete they had a lot of broadcast time that they hated before they got their treats. Folks like that are kind of stupid. Too many other programs that might appeal to them in this market!

For the record, I think Pete Davis was a very entertaining fill-in for The Kimmer and The King. His shows back in the late '90's made for great evening WGST listening inside the perimeter.

I liked Pete and Wayne together. apart, they were just OK.

Pete, left to his own devices ( a shortcut machine loaded with soundbytes from the Simpsons and the internet) was tolerable, but every now and then he would go off on a tangent that was beyond 'politically incorrect'. Calling WSB 'classless bastards', making fun of retards and cripples, etc... Stern has done that to DEATH. Pete did have good sports commentary, but could not stick to the script. Too many late nights at Manuels.....

Wayne seemed to have promise, but they never mined it. Or I should say, 'nevermind it'. While WSB is looking ahead in bringing in new late night talent to replace Boortz, WGST has not approached this aspect AT ALL. They just keep throwing stuff up on the wall and seeing what 'stinks'. Wayne is not a good producer, I am afraid. He is more interested in culling a check rather than putting together bits and writing compelling story lines. No guests, no comedy, no local parody songs, sloppy timing,etc.. just insights into Kimmer's life and opinions. Since he has lost his fantasy goddess, I must admit it's somewhat more interesting...

Kimmer used to be GREAT. Honestly, when Clinton was in office, Kimmer was on form. When that ended, we were treated to endless phony-ing it in type shows ( greatest movie lines, bad teenage drivers, rehashed Boortz material.) Now that his funniest contributors are gone, we are seeing the emperor's clothes. Branding himself on air, tattoo tuesdays, sushi eating, all the hallmarks of a downhill slide. With WSB growing stale, now would be the time to capitalize. Mike Rose was good at using meager resources in taking on Goliath with a slingshot. One horrible misstep, and he hit the skids along with a bunch of others. But there is no denying that the best years of WGST were back when they cared more about the product they put out...

At least management is trying to promote him, though. I've seen his mug on taxicabs, and now they have prizes again. But that's not going to cut it anymore. Kimmer needs a new producer, some decent live production, new voices and a general overhaul of the 'tone' of the show. Or, he can coast to the end of his contract and move on to somewhere else. Radio abhors a vacuum, and Kimmer's show has sucked the life out of WGST in the afternoon. It's a real shame, 'cause for a while he was really good!

I must admit that I do like 'Larry from Hey-Hiram'. The guy puts together a pretty funny radio skit. Well done, whoever you are.

I also genuinely like Pete Davis. I think he overdid the sound-bites when he reported his 5:00 news segment, though I think he was quite humorous in his own right, and didn't need the extra padding.

As far as Wayne is concerned...I hate to be so critical, but he unfortunately has a noticeable 'lazy L' lisp like Tom Brokaw, and he needs to work on covering that somehow. Also, when he participates in a show 'sans Kimmer', he (unconsciously?) tries to imitate Kimmer-esque phrases, etc. That just does not work - at least for me.

I love Wendy Grossman. I think she has a great throatie/raspy radio voice that is unusually attractive. They need to use her more.......so to speak.

Wendy Grossman . . . Yeah, she is HOT . . . And she looks good too! Thank goodness The Princess does not visit this forum! Wendy lives in my neighborhood and I look forward to running into her at the grocery store!

I think WSB really missed the boat by not cultivating Royal Marshall. In my opinion he was an exceptional local talent clued in to the Atlanta area. Being a Southern boy, I just don't cotton to Krock like I did Royal.

I get Phil Hendre, but his stick is like listening to dedicated welfare recipients fight over meat at the local discount meat market counter. It is old after the first two minutes. Pete Davis had great evening success on WGST in the late 1990's. More recently, Randy Cross had a short lived WGST program even though his live sports program leaned towards the liberal inside the perimeter listening group. I think WGST has forgotten what worked for them in the past.

Some folks in radio managenemt are just not thinking . . .

I really enjoyed Royal's show and wrote in to SB when they took him off the air. I never do that, but I was truly ticked when they got rid of his show. I know he was very tired from working Boortz in the morning, then prepping for his show, and then the show late at night. That gives you time for no life at all.

I'm just glad he gets decent airtime on Boortz's show keeping Neal in line!
