ECU COMING TO 107.9

107.9 is the new FM flamethrower for ECU football and Basketball starting with football in 08.This has been a long time coming and I think it will be great for all involved.

So they are finally dropping Duke? I never understood how they made any advertising money on that deal. Sure there are a few Duke fans in this area but largely you're either for State, Carolina, or ECU.

WSFL and ECU were a weird marriage. I think Beasley just needed to put the contract somewhere to be able to claim it until they could get Duke off 107.9. Interesting they will be carrying basketball as well.... I guess Henry didn't work out a deal with them carrying basketball and baseball on 94.3.

Duke paid 107.9 a fee to run the games,ECU and 107.9 will be cool.I hope they do a good old fashioned tailgate pregame with music and such. 1250 and 1070(94.3) do great pre and post game coverage but its really overkill. There is only so much you can say for one three hour ballgame,Locally 1250 does 4 pregame hours and Shirley,Wes,Clip and the crew do a fabulous job. They do 90% of the work and don't get nearly enough credit.1070(94.3) also does a great job.Patrick is a talented person and Jeff,Trent,Michael,Creech and James put in long hours and do a great job.Staying on until 2am or later is really kinda useless because all you are doing is serving a half dozen or less people who eat, sleep, breathe and poop Pirate football.
I love the Pirates but it is a very small group of diehards who are up at 2 in the morning after 7 hours of coverage. When you interview pete the pirate and the guys picking up trash in the stands that's a little much.Pirate fans win because they get better coverage than most major big money schools.I do find it interesting than I can get 1250 in Robersonville at 11 pm in October.2500 watts directional at night. Those are amazing atmospheric conditions for that to happen
;D. Jeff Diamond I'm guessing will anchor 107.9's coverage and it will be first class.
I think ECU fans will be pleased with 107.9...

Baseball cranks up Feb 22nd on 1070.The Pirates are preseason top 25 and picked 2nd in C-USA behind Rice.It should be a great year.It was a smart move by Beasley to hang on to ECU.Having the Basketball on 107.9 next year is huge for the program. This is the most powerful stick Pirate Basketball has ever been on.
Now all ECU needs to do is sign Coach Mac longterm and I really believe the program is headed in the right direction.

Will 107.9 keep running Duke or will the go in favor of ECU? If they keep Duke there may be confilicts and then which one gets to go on the air before the other.

If 107.9 keeps both teams they are doomed as a music station. Supposedly (I don't know that I really always believe this to be true) long-form sports programming (with just one team) is murder to a music station.

ECU Basketball is enough of a bane to them. I really can't believe Beasley agreed to that one.

Double J the ECU 107.9 agreement begins with the upcoming football season.Duke will move somewhere else, maybe another Beasley station.Carrying sports can be a double edged sword. The money is well... the money. I think it will be fine. There will be some programming issues to work out with the Saturday stuff.John's Sock Hop will be affected the most.If the tailgate thing is music intensive,it will work to 107.9's advantage and after the game go back to music. When I'm out at a tailgate
hardly anyone is listening to all the talking on the other stations.People are cooking and tossing the football listening to music on the radio or now on satellite. If you come up with the right mix of music and info for the pregame you won't lose your music listener and you let the football listener know that the station is committed to them as well.If you turn it into a party and not a talkfest
it will benefit everyone. Its tricky, but in my opinion it can be done WOOT.107.9 and ECU I think are just a natural fit. There are people at the station who will make it sound great.I'm looking forward to being at least a small part of it.

ECU football is a natural fit, yes, and as a graduate I'm thrilled to finally see them back on a class C in this market. We haven't had that since 93.3 WDLX carried them years ago. But I just don't know that enough people care about ECU basketball, especially in its current state, that it will help 107.9 at all.

Maybe I'm just talking out of my hindquarters, and if that's the case we'll see. But I don't figure that someone turning the station on in Jacksonville at 8 on a Wednesday night is going to be happy to hear basketball. That person will then be changing to 94.1.

Just curious, where is 107.9's strong areas in this market? And strong as in, what counties listen to them the most -- Pitt, Craven, Onslow, Carteret?

You will always have some listeners who have little or no interest in any sports.
You can't be all things to all people.94.1 could benefit some..94.1 has been on the air a little over a month now. There are times I like the music and times I can't figure where they are coming from.I am a fan of good radio and I want to get excited about 94.1 but it just is missing some things.. some simple things that would make it a much better station. At this point 94.1 is no threat to 107.9.I hope 94.1 gets its act together because new new station is a good thing.94.1 just doesn't sound like its being paid alot of attention to.Alot of that comes with being live in some dayparts. You can't just make a half hearted change and expect
listeners and money to fall out of the sky but 94.1 has alot of potential and as a
radio lover I hope they reach that potential.
