Ed Carroll has apparently been told the station will not renew his contract this November. Julio Marenghi is allowing him to continue working until that point; who knows if he actually will. No word on a successor yet, but odds are that CBS4 will shop for outside talent. I'm sad to see Ed go; he did a credible job and will be missed. Looks like the "Bates/Shortsleeve/Carroll" days are now long gone.

Am sure the "Chikage" has a degree in meteorology but more is needed. By the way, is "Chikage" a real name?

I agree, Ed has done a fine job while at CBS4. He certainly has "gravitas" and exudes confidence that meteorologists on other stations do not. Hopefully Mish Michaels will reconsider her decision and take the chief met. job. But that is doubtful? Mish is a real scientist and likes to be out there chasing storms. If she doesn't take it, I think Barry would be good in the interim (sort of like the role Bob Schieffer is playing on the evening news.)

Personally, I like Chikage Windler and would love to see her jump to CBS4. Her unique name and voice make her stand out, and in just 2 years, she always has pretty good name recognition/identity in this market.

Seriously, I think petty pot-shots at Chikage are quite unfair...she does an awesome job. So did Ed Carroll, but like everything at Soldiers Field...things change. They think changing the music will boost their ratings. Now they just sound like a KFC commercial.

Personally, I wanna see Mish take over.

It's official.

Ed Carroll has left WBZ-4.

The Boston Herald's Inside Track column is reporting today (September 2nd) that Ed Carroll has left.

According to the article, Carroll was told that his contract would not be renewed, but would be allowed to continue working for WBZ until the contract ended in November. Carroll decide to leave immediately.

Who might be his replacement??

I don't know the contract status of Boston's other TV weather anchors, but should the contracts of people like Todd Gross of WHDH-7, Kevin Lemanowicz of WFXT-25, or Mike Wankum of WLVI-56 be close to expiration, I could see WBZ make a run at one of them, while rotating their other weather anchors until such time as their new hire would be available to jump stations.

Other possibilities might come from nearby markets. WMUR-9 Manchester weeknight weather anchor Mike Haddad and WJAR-10 Providence weeknight weather anchor Gary Ley may also become contendors for the WBZ job.

Three possible candidates from in-house who could get promoted are current WBZ weekend weather anchor Melissa Bell, occassional weather anchor Mish Michaels (who, according to the article, had been offered the weeknight weather job but turned it down), and current morning weather anchor Barry Burbank.

Given the specialized nature of weather in New England, WBZ would probably be best off hiring someone who is either a native New Englander or is working/has worked as a weather anchor in New England.

Chikage's mother was Japanese... that's why she was named Chikage, which in Japanese means "Land of 1000 skies".

If they want something BIG, what if WBZ brings in WCVB's (formerly WHDH's) Harvey Leonard? Then he would have officially been on all of Boston's Big 3. Maybe even Dick Albert or Dave Brown. Anything's possible. How about Mark Rosenthal return to Boston for 4.

Harvey was offered the WBZ chief gig at the same time he was offered the WCVB job.. he chose WCVB.

This is the absolute stupidest post on the board. I understand that you are upset about the Ed Carroll news, but why take it out on Chikage? Yes, she is one of the younger faces on the Boston TV dial, but she is quite good at what she does. She easily has the potential to be chief meteorologist someday at one of the Boston stations.

Who cares what the meteorologist's name is? Don't you care that the forecasts are accurate and that the presentation is acceptable?

And as for the "bimbos" on 7, well, they're beating 4. That shows me enough that they know what they're doing.
