Good to hear Mike Barnicle comment on the vagaries of Boston television and come to the defense of Ed Carroll on Barnicle's program today.

No offense to the other weather people at CBS 4 but getting rid of Ed Carroll is a big mistake. Mish Michael's has the knowledge and the intellect but not the on air presence needed in the position and I think she knows that. Perhaps, that is why she has turned down the position to permanently replace Ed Carroll.

Again, as to knowledge Mish Michael is probably smarter than Carroll but there is more to the on-air position than that.

I get the feeling after listening to her that she has just told me how the clock was made when all I wanted to know was the time or in this case the weather. She needs to "personalize" it more.

Not a knock against her but a talent she must learn if she decides to stay.

On the other hand Ellen Ferrara who fills in on weekend has that talent so it is Not a sexist thing from this poster's point of view.
 
I think you're WAAYYY off, parklane. Ed Carroll wasn't dumped because he wasn't technically smart. He was dumped because the station felt he had a bland on-air presence and couldn't connect with viewers. Mish Michaels is widely seen as having the technical smarts and a dynamic personality and presentation style. She probably has the highest name recognition of any meteorologist in the city other than Harvey and Dick. Mish is one of the few remaining "known stars" in this city (along with Natalie, Lobel, Randy, Jack, Dick, and Harvey).

Mish is being a good team player and working Ed's shift for now, but I expect her to again turn the job down. CBS4 will have to bring in someone new, and bring them in fast. Barry Burbank wouldn't be a bad person for the job, but I really don't want to see Melissa Bell anywhere other than where she is now. She has an awful presentation style and is described by many as being "crazy" off camera.
 
I don't think we really disagree except that I always thought that Ed Carroll connected with the viewers especially since he is local - North Quincy and his ethnic decent - Irish - connected with many of the viewers in the Boston audience.

Years ago Don Kent - a Quincy native connected with the viewers because he was really the first knowledgeable television weathercaster and because was local/

I am sure I am not telling you something you don't already know about Boston but it is still very tribal.

I agree with you parklane, but I think there's more to connecting with viewers that simply "being local" or sharing a certain ethnic decent. It's a certain ability to reach the audience and make them notice you... Mish Michaels does this. People talk about her. I never heard anyone in "everyday life" mention Ed Carroll. He did grow up in Quincy, but how would you know it unless you asked him? He may be from around here, but he doesn't "exude Boston".

Don't get me wrong... I liked Ed Carroll very much and feel he was a victim of changing trends in the TV industry. In the mid to late 90s, when he rose to prominence, the trend in local TV was that personality did not matter. Generic was in. Channel 7 succeeded with it, so the other stations thought they could too. Channel 4 dumped Schwoegler because he had too much personality and replaced him with the generic Ed Carroll... he was exactly what they wanted at the time... Over the past few years, with the increasing fractioning of the audience, generic became a bad thing and personality is now back! Look at cable news, and how they are trying to build themselves around "personalities". Now all of a sudden, Ed Carroll (who had worked for years at not having a personality) desperately tried to develop one. He was doing a good job at it, but ultimately it was too late. The audience had already reached their verdict on him. That's why you see the station wanting to give the job to Mish (she has a lot of personality) or even considering bringing Bruce back!

I know Jerry Williams hated - with a high degree of humor - Bruce Schwoegler's waving arms but, yes, "Bring Back Bruce"... which is far better than "Dump Dan Duquette". That actually happened. Did Jerry have anything to do with that?

I would say Bruce is about 60 today, but I'll bet his arms still work.

Yeah, I'm not sure why - but she IS damn hot! Not particularly beautiful, yet there's just something that keeps you tuned right in....

She sure as hell is a lot more interesting to watch than Eileen Ferrara, who looks (and sounds) like a typical soccer mom from Westborough (or somewhere similah).

If either Melissa Bell or (more likely) Barry Burbank gets promoted to the weeknight weather anchor post at WBZ-4, I could see Ellen Ferrara filling the slot vacated by the weather anchor getting promoted.

Another issue: If any "name" Boston weather anchors are within a few months of the end of their contracts, I could see a situation where Mish Michaels, even if not becoming Ed Carroll's long-term replacement, could be an "interim" weeknight weather anchor for a few months until such time as WBZ is able to hire away someone from the competition.

Does anyone know if the contract of a "name" weather anchor at any other Boston TV station is about to expire??

Yeech. She always has that startled looking expression. Kind of
looks like Jennifer "Runaway Bride" Wilbanks. You want hot
weather bunnies, go to Weather Channel, Fox News or
CNN sometimes.

That's Ellen, not Eileen. She replaced Bob Copeland at 5 back
in the day and then got tossedd in favor of Rosenthal(another weak
met, but not as bad as all-time worst Carroll) She has lanced for 4
ever since , plus her day job at WSI.

Don Kent is alive and well. Think he lives in Maine or New Hampshire and may still do weather broadcast there on on the cape.

As I said, not sure why she's attractive...kind of a diamond in the rough quality. The eyes aren't nearly as bad as Wilbanks or Uma Pemmaraju's for that matter. And, Bell seems to have a nice set of legs to boot.

No arguement about the hotties on the Weather Channel (wow!); but good lookin' weather bunnies are a bit rarer on Fox News and CNN.

Sorry I got her name wrong, but then again she is pretty forgettable. Again, she reminds me of the SUV-driving housewives that I see in line at Dunkin' Dounts at lunchtime. And her delivery isn't much better than theirs either.

I don't see her getting very far out of the market (Providence, perhaps) because she has too much of the regional look and sound. In fact, from what I can tell, she is lucky as Hell to have a job in a top 10 market at all.

88. living happily just outside of concord. was doing updates for
'qrc on the cape up until few months ago. now sitting by the phone
waiting for julio's call.
