Ed Hill OUT as PD at KMPS

Was reading another thread and someone mentioned how bad KMPS was compared to the WOLF...and that Johnson and Johnson were not as good as Fit with a Z. I decided to listen in today...and JJ not quite as good sounding as I remember them on the Bull in Salt Lake.

Then I read the afternoon email...and Ed Hill is now gone and Carey is the PD.

<Carey Curelop has been promoted to cluster VP/Programming and PD of Country KMPS following today's exit of Ed Hill>

I wonder how long it will take for Johnson and Johnson to be cut at this rate...

Not sure. But the show did not sound that polished today. BUT now that we find out that Ed is gone...that could have thrown them for a loop today.

My thoughts are that the Wolf positioned KMPS as old and crusty. What does CBS do? They eventually fire all the old and crusty people that were there thinking that was the problem. New PD and all new staff...but the public did not come back. They pissed off the people who liked Icky and Stubbs, and the rest. Those listeners already did not like the Wolf....so now you have a Wolf sound a like. (I know that is over simplified) I would like to know more about the W 25-54 and 35-64 numbers.

Ed Hill is a smart smart man. He will land somewhere. Guy is goof, a nut, and I learned a bunch from him. I honestly wish I would've listened MORE when he was helping me launch Cat Country in Colorado Springs. One thing I took from his help is "write imaging everyday".

We will see what happens.

I know Becky Brenner is now with Albright & O'Malley, but KMPS needs to bring her (and Tony Thomas) back. And no, it's not pining for the past - they are two very talented people who got a raw deal.

CBS has a big commitment to country, so I don't see them giving up on it. The problem they have is too much heritage. The Wolf came along as young and fresh. Hard to do that when you've been around for 40 years. So rebranding is a more likely idea. Clear Channel did that with a lot of country stations, and it paid off.

Now Ed can spend more time on his TV / On Camera career.

I always thought of CBS radio having a commitment to all-news radio around the US.

I wonder if young listeners prefer modern branding (e.g. "100.7 The Wolf") more than they do traditional branding (e.g. "94-1 K-M-P-S"). Either way, I would hope that CBS would find a way to "park" the KMPS letters at another station if they ever decided to flip the format or the branding...

2 points.....

Having worked with some of the greats in Seattle radio history over the last 40 years one thing I have always remembered hearing from a few PD's...."your station is only as strong as your morning show". I have tried to listen to Johnson & Johnson a few times and it just is not any good.

Casey Curelop is an incredible talent and has a great track record has a professional.

He will do his best to fix it, and I am guessing quickly.

I worked with Carey Curelop in the mid 80's when Carey was PD for WYNF (Y95) in Tampa Bay. I was the station's Chief Engineer.

Could we see 'the Bull' or 'the Cat' coming to 94.1 MHz? I'm guessing something of the sort will happen soon so as to appeal to the target demo. (KDRK Spokane did this years ago...going from just FM 94, KDRK, to '94 the Cat' and then '93.7 the Mountain'.)

I'm guessing there is no way they rebrand and drop the KMPS letters. I think they will start by dumping the morning show.

If I recall, Steven Killbreath hosted the KMPS morning show in between the Candy+Potter and Johnson+Johnson era. He sounded very personable, and it disappointed me when the new morning program was rolled out because he was so entertaining. I suppose its common practice to bring in a "morning team", but I still think its possible to cultivate an entertaining morning program without having to bring in a whole new entourage from another city.

Fitz will announce over the next few days a syndication deal for the morning show at The Wolf in Alaska.
