Ed Reimers, former WBEN AM-TV announcer probably best known and remembered as the long time national voice of Allstate Insurance radio and TV spots, and also for various TV dramatic roles (always as a distringuished silver-haired authority figure) on series including Star Trek, has passed away in Saratoga Springs at the age of 96.
Western New York old-timers will also remember him as one of the principal announcers at WBEN radio and TV in the years right after World War II...he was one of a number of people who called WBEN home during the 1940s before moving on to national radio and TV visibility, a group which also included Jack Paar.
(WGR also gave broadcasting its share of national stars, including kids' TV host and producer "Buffalo Bob" Smith and comedian Foster Brooks, while in a later time WKBW would be a major stop on the professional road for national syndicated overnight radio personality Joey Reynolds, Price is Right announcer Rod Roddy, Fox TV's Mark Thompson and NBC west coast personality and character actor Fritz Coleman.)
