Just wondering if there could be any truth to this story: http://rawstory.com

Does Schultz really have the charisma to be a liberal flamethrower?
______________

>This is an excellent example of how false information gets quickly circulated in this world. Your subject line makes a suggestion that is clearly refuted by the content that you cite. Yes, the Ed Schultz show is being purchased by a couple of former Clear Channel executives. No, the show is not being purchased by Clear Channel. Why raise a question that has already been answered?

Thanks, it wasn't entirely clear to me as a radio outsider
______________

Yes, these are just former Clear Channel execs, but one of them of Randy Michaels who almost single-handedly created the mega radio enterprise. Michaels is probably the most powerful single individual in the Radio business.

... or is it an insiders sleight of hand?

> No, the show is not being purchased by Clear Channel.

Well, in the past 24 hours I've had discussions with several people who are positive Clear Channel was the purchaser of the Schultz show. It seems the "Ex Clear Channel Executives" was heard as "Clear Channel" by these people
Or is it an insiders sleight of hand, intended to generate confusion and buzz?
______________

No, Randy Michaels is about as "out" as you can be with Clear Channel. Yes, Michaels was almost single-handedly responsible for the success of the CC radio arm (mostly with Jacor before CC even entered the picture), but he and the Mays family had a falling out.

And there's no way the Mays (or John Hogan) are going to commit to any association with Randy Michaels now. The success of CC Radio now depends totally on the current management--apart and separate from Randy Michaels and his history.

For more info, read John Gorman's article on the topic from a couple years ago
Edited by Johnny Morgan on 06/14/05 07:21 PM.

Ed Schultz and Clear Channel

Ed Schultz, of course, has had a long association with Clear Channel. He started as a local, then regional talk show host based at Clear Channel's KFGO-AM in Fargo, ND:

http://www.kfgo.com/main.html

His local midday show has now been taken over by a former (?) politician.

I don't know how long CC has owned KFGO, but I'm pretty sure they were the ones behind expanding his reach via regional syndication in the Dakotas and nearby markets. That regional syndication is not related to his national afternoon drive show, and indeed, KFGO now carries Ed's national show 2-5 PM CT.

None of this has anything to do with Mr. Michaels et al., and their recent acquisition of Schultz's program via "P1". Both Mr. Michaels and Mr. Krane are no longer connected with Clear Channel/Premiere.

>"Your "people" whoever they are, are misled. This story has been well-covered by numerous media--Michaels and Krane have bought the Schultz show and they are no longer employed by Clear Channel. Stop spreading mindless conspiracy theories.

Article Link: Randy Michaels and the Future of Radio

Cleaning papers today and found this article...coincidentally.
Randy Michaels and the Future of radio...he has predictions for what radio might become, very interesting...going to internet/broadband, less emphasis on terrestrial stations...It's happening already with Internet audio streams and associated FM microtransmitters...But as for broadband, I cringe at that...I want to hear my long distance MW/SW stations! I guess I'll have to live in the country the rest of my life! :)

LOVE OF RADIO ENDURES FOR RANDY MICHAELS

Radio & Records

"The former Clear Channel Radio CEO, now President of start-up broadcast company Radioactive LLC, made his first public appearance since leaving America's largest radio-station owner at a TRS keynote luncheon held Saturday. Michaels was honored with the R&R 2005 Lifetime Achievement..."

Ed Schultz bought by Randy Michaels

>Thanks, it wasn't entirely clear to me as a radio outsider<

I thought that was apparent from your first post. Note the warm welcome and professional critique you received. This is standard radio culture and not unique to this board.

The writer of the article doesn't seem too knowledgeable either: "Michaels, formerly CEO of Clear Channel Radio, has been credited with the firm’s awesome radio growth". Clear Channel did not enjoy awesome radio growth while Michaels was CEO. If it did, it Michaels might still be CEO. The "awesome" growth was through acquisition which was accomplished, for good or for ill, by Clear Channel founder Lowry Mays. In fact, Michaels only came to be CEO of Clear Channel when it acquired his company, Jacor. Now that company experienced awesome growth.

Michaels is a prickly and combative S.O.B. in the tradition of Steve Jobs, Ted Turner and other creative entrepeneurial types. All three were ousted as CEO at some point in there careers. Michaels made a lot of money buying stations when licenses to operate transmitters ("sticks" in radio parlance) were the scarce commodity. Now that that alternate delivery systems (internet streams, mp3s, satellite) are proliferating the value of programminng (sometimes called "content") should increase in value.

So no, Clear Channel did not acquire The Ed Schultz Show. But in my opinion, should have.
______________
