Ed Stolz

Entercom's building...

I interviewed for a job in the building. I was impressed with their operation...even though I didn't get the gig...

----original message----
It's been a while, but the last time I was at 5345 Madison Av. they had top drawer studios---rivaling the majors.

Newsperson responds:

Ed Stolz and Royce International has been turned down by the FCC for another extension/re-instatement fo the 1500 Khz. permit near Burbank. It seems that Ed expects to hold onto this permit into perpetuity.

Back in the old days in Sacramento it seemed that Ed was always on the defense about something.

It's hard to feel sorry for someone who was forced to accept 20 million dollars. Yes Entercom did take advantage of the situation where they were going to trade a San Francisco FM (105.3?) for KWOD and instead changed it to cash. Ed also made some mistakes especially thinking the deal was over when they sold 105.3. It came back to haunt him 3.5 years later, just before the 4-year statute of limitations was up, and Entercom sued to force the sale of KWOD.

Remember the old 1030 Khz. at Folsom? Ed purchase the permit before it went off the air. That also experied and he applied for the frequency in 2000. A permit for 1030 Khz. has be awarded to KM Communications for 1030 Khz. at Elk Grove, CA. so there goes Folsom.

Any other good stories to share about ED?

Next question....WHY?! ???

I found it odd in the early-1990s when he was attempting to reinstate 1500 KC (the old KROQ, KBLA)
in Burbank; one Broadcasting/Cablecasting Yearbook had a full staff listed for that silent station, including
Adam Baum and Adam Smasher doing programming and music...and, of course, Ed Stolz, General Manager,
ad infinitum...

And, no, Ken Gimblin was not listed in the above, as he had been for KWOD's listing in the aforementioned
book for years...now THERE'S a name outta the past, albeit in sports cycles...

First, as a follow-up, I doubt if we'll ever see KHWY/KTNQ/KKSA 1030 come back to life...but
it was fun in the Summer 1987, when Tony Cox and Tim Stevens were doing '60s/'70s music
on 1030 for a brief three or four months as AM Stereo 1030, "10-Q, The Rock"...

As for Stolz...at least he still has an FM in Palm Springs... ::)

Ah yes, remember it well...the old "10 Q." I remember Tony, but not Tim.

But...

How many here remember Lindsay Wright? I remember tuning in one day to hear her havin' so much fun on the air, Folsom Lake was choppy. Anyone know whatever happened to her? I miss her.

I met Lindsay when I worked at Columbia School of broadcasting around 84-85. She became a friend, and obviously had a lot of talent and was a natural on the air. I believe she MAY have been Bi-polar, she went through major ups and downs in her mood. I think she just couldn't handle radio any more or lost interest. She got married in the early 90's and moved up to Pollock Pines, I haven't seen/talked to her since the mid-90's.

Nice lady and a great person, she could have gone far in the biz had she wanted/been able to.

Tim Stevens is/was a cousin of Tony Cox. I believe he is deceased. I have tapes of Tim Stevens, Tony Cox and Gene Lane on 1030 KIOQ. I have KIOQ 1030 bumper stickers too. Tony signed the station on the air for about an hour the night before Gene Lane (KROY) officially signed the station on the air the next morning. 1030AM may one day be a station in Elk Grove, CA, according to the FCC website and to "newsperson."
FWIW 1030 AM KIOQ during the day could be heard in Yreka, CA. very clearly. It had an awsome signal during the day.

Hey Newsperson? Didn't Ed get $25 Million for KWOD? Gee with that much cash he could have bought a couple of stations elsewhere easily. Why didn't he do that?

Sad about Tim if that's true about his passing...seemed like a good guy on and off the air when I met him
and Tony that year at the 1030 studios in Folsom...

Yes, I have that monochromatic diamond-shaped KIOQ bumper-sticker, too. Proving that black-and-white
could look VERY sharp on a bumper-sticker...

If they can get 1030 back on with a similar coverage-area of the original incarnation, that would be
awesome...but it's so expensive to fire-up a new AM these days, especially one with a directional array...

Thank you for clarifying, RSO -- it WAS KIOQ...

I was thinking of KTNQ, the Ten-Q in Southern California that The Real Don Steele worked in the late-1970s
(post-KGBS)...

I heard KIOQ 1030 once in Redding at that time...a great day signal, and in C-QUAM AM Stereo, too!. But when it went to
the 1-kw night pattern to protect KTWO, Caspar, WY, I could no longer hear it in Napa...bleccch!...

Ed got a $20 million check (after all the legal/court fees he was stuck with it came in closer to 15) but, last I heard, he never cashed it as he felt it would legitimize the "sale". He will never recognize Entercom as the true owner of the 106.5 spot on the dial.

Never cashed a multi million dollar check? Could he be that wealthy that he doesn't want the money? Absolutely nuts!
