ED WALSH, WBZ RADIO MORNING NEWS ANCHOR, RETIRING

I heard it last night on the 6 PM WBZ-TV newscast. Jack Williams mentioned that Walsh would retire at end of this month after only 4 years at WBZ.

Nice pipes for the early AM. Will they go outside to get someone else?

Those pipes; that pleasant manner--a combo that will be essentially impossible to duplicate. A good choice would be Jordan Weinstein from WGBH (FM)--not to be confused with Jordan Rich of WBZ and elsewhere. A lot of people considered Gary LaPierrre a tough act to follow. I never liked his harder-edged approach. I thought Walsh was perfect in AM drive on WBZ.

I was rooting for Rod Fritz at the time...give him the gig.

FWIW, I think Fritz would be a fine candidate for that slot. I've listened to him for a long time -- like on WPEN Philly more years ago than either of us is likely to admit..

Rod was the morning man on WRKO during the Peter Blute and Andy Moes era. I really liked Andy...called him once or twice when he had the noon on Saturday show. I remember when there was a robbery at the Handel and Haydn Society; Andy pointed out that all the newsies were pronoucing Haydn and "Hay-den". It rhymes with HIDe-N-(seek).

Yeah, give Rod Fritz the position. The few times I have heard him, I liked his delivery. Ed will be missed. But as Jordan mentioned this morning, he is taking the smart approach;

leave now while he still has many good years ahead of him to enjoy "retired" life.

BTW, I believe Ed would make a great talk show host. Steve had him in the studio a year or so ago just "gabbin" for a half hour or so, & he is really laid back & relaxed when not "on" for the news.

I enjoyed that half hour, wish I had streamed/captured it...

I also think Rod Fritz should get the position. Curiously enough, I believe Rod grew up in Natick, where Ed Walsh also lived in his youth, although he (Ed) graduated from Wellesley High School.

I think Rod went to high school with Susan Wornick...maybe a year ahead of her. Susan graduated from Natick high in 1967.

My prediction is two-fold:
1. It will be Rod Fritz
2. The shift will change from 5-10 to 4:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Fritz seems to have injected a lot more personality in recent weeks.

In Boston radio, one measures one's career by how many stations one worked at with Rod Fritz.
