Edge 103.9 Making Changes This Friday At Noon

Listening to the Edge over the last week, they have been telling listeners to go online to their website and take the listener survey. I took this myself, and its basically asking a bunch of questions about the music the Edge plays, and what changes you would like to see take place. They have different artists you can select that you would like to hear on the station. Some they already play, and others they do not play. It looks like they are definately wanting to broaden the playlist. Then a liner played today with Robin Nash saying that the musical changes would be taking affect starting Friday July 3rd at noon. Should be interesting.

Now that is something you dont see every day. I put in my two cents and hopefully some good changes come on friday. I really think they need to dump kevin and bean. They should as I have said in the past go deeper into the history of alternative rock, get back to the roots of what made alternative rock great while still playing the best of the new. I would say a hybrd of classic alternative/modern ac/aaa. Focus on the music and let the music sell the station. No need for hype, wacky djs or all talk morning shows.

Sounds pretty good. This is just my opinion, but if they could reflect a sound somewhat to what's being done on the Sirius Alt Nation channel, that would be great.

I would fill out the survey, but it wont let me pass the first page unless I leave a comment in the box next to "other" when it comes to favorite station, and it's not possible to type inside the box. I could get around it if I picked another station as a favorite, but I don't wish to give credit to another station as my top choice if it really isn't my top choice... But I'm sure whatever is done, in the end it will only be for the best.

Uh... this kind of "research" is an engraved invitation for clever/unscrupulous competitors-and-or-pranksters to throw these dudes down a path of self-destruction via an organized "input campaign" pointing to artists and tunes that fall somewhere within the range of format acceptability but... uh... may be among the poorer testing segment. Ya know?

Not that I've ever done any such thing, or know anyone who would even think of doing such a thing.

Bottom line: this is why serious broadcasters pay for real research...

I'm not sure if anybody can get away of doing such a thing without making a huge stink-- lawsuits included. You can hardly prank a competing station these days, unfortunately.

There's a battle going to court right now in Fresno for something silly. A month before KYNO-AM 1300 switched to news/talk, their competition at KMJ-AM 580 registered the web domain name (also known as "cybersquatting"): kyno1300.com. Get this-- the page lead to KMJ's homepage!

Clever, or what? But while I think it's a simple case of "you snooze, you lose", and unpreparedness, fact is that it is going to court. An "organized input campaign" like you mentioned, if involving a Valley radio station, will probably end up being bad news for both parties.

Furthermore, these radio stations using "Survey Monkey" for the cheap, easy, and amateur/nonprofessional ways to get research done is growing-- a growing problem. KOOL is doing a listener survey as well, though it's not as blatant as KEDJ's. You can find the KOOL listener survey tucked-away in your At Work Rewards account. In both cases, I hope the results are taken with a grain of salt to feed curiosity. I've noticed serious issues with questions, the way they're worded, and the options given for answers. There are also basic, personal questions about you, the listener, that are missed in all of the surveys I've seen.

Invest in real research.

Sister station KVGS did the same thing a few months ago to their listeners. They did it to formulate the station based on what the listeners like. This led to the station going more to alternative gold than new music so who knows what's going to happen...

With the exception of Kevin and Bean this morning, the station has been running jockless all day. Only thing being heard in between songs are liners from Robin Nash and Tim Virgin reminding everyone there's one more day left to fill out the listener survey, and then to listen in Friday at noon for the changes to begin taking affect.

First off, that is a really, really long survey. And like amfmxm said, it's a complete invitation for people to screw around. Basically, its a set up to say on Friday "hey, we listened. And we're going to play more of your favorite music and less new music." Problem is there are a lot of other very established stations (Mix, Peak among others) that already play those songs. For whatever reason, The Edge has just not been able to capitalize on its position as an exclusive format. Tim Virgin and Robin Nash don't deserve what they are going through, but sorry, Kevin and Bean don't just suck in Phoenix, they are irrelavant. And like a lot of decisions they have made, more than likely the one they announce on Friday won't work either.

Seems like a fairly effective method of allowing the listener to feel as though they are part of the station and make it feel interactive. This is no different than an "All Request Lunch Hour" where no songs are actual requests. Or the vote for your 500 favorite songs and we'll play them back this weekend, stuff... all pre-selected.

Not a bad ploy to market some new, fresh music, although I don't see the station really taking too much input from listeners.

You mean the All Request Nooner on KOOL was...fake?

But Peaker used to play back phoners of actual listeners requesting songs that
he would then play!

Songs like...
Happy Together
My Girl
My Guy
Unchained Melody
Oh, Pretty Woman
California Dreaming
I'm A Believer
Brown Eyed Girl (couldn't forget that one ;D)

Ohhhhhh...you mean those songs were going to be played anyway?
And all this time I thought......oh, now I feel so unclean! ;)

Stunting has began on the Edge! Looks like this has been going on since 9am this morning. They have this continuous light music playing as if you were on hold on the phone. Then every now and then you hear an operator type girl's voice saying "Welcome To The 103.9 Help Line, We Are Currently Working To Build You A Better Radio Station. Your current wait time is approximately...and then they say how many minutes until noon when it looks like the station will re-launch. We'll all find out at noon!

So far so good, i like the less hype presentation. Have heard alot of songs I haven't heard in years. They only have to get rid of that crappy l.a. morning show now. I be happy with Robin Nash in mornings and some great music intensive show.

Definately liking the more musical direction they are taking. Since noon I am pretty sure they have been rolling commerical free as well. They are going to focus on more music, and less commercials. If this is the case, Kevin and Bean may not be around as much because their morning show certainly does not fit a music intensive direction. KEDJ has also branded themselves a little differently by referring to themselves now as FM 103.9 Edge Radio. Your Music, Your Station. They are focusing on a deeper playlist, with less repetition. So far so good!

I like it but they went back well similar to what they were when they did the same thing in summer of 2004 as i said about marc the more things change the more they stay the same i hope and it works and they stick around!!!

The design on the websight is similar to what indie 1031 is.

Great point old wise one. Make sure you give Marc a call. I know you have his number.

When I took the survey I realized that I only listened to the Edge less than an hour a day. With the changes I'd gladly leave it on all day...but will they last (flashback to '04)?
