Edge did play the Cardigans Love Fool when it was released back in the day, it's not an recurrent add. Eminem is, I think the first eminem song they played was the song from 8 Mile. The Cardigans...were at one time, a cutting edge alternative swedish band.

Outkast sat near the top of the Modern Rock charts in the USA.

I dunno why people keep harping on Edge 102 as this cutting edge radio station. Long time listeners realized TEN YEARS ago the station had moved away from it's alternative music roots. In fact, 87 was the year CFNY really started to move away from it's roots, but one could argue, the entire modern music scene was pretty much gone by 1991.

Edge 102 is a New Rock CHR. Nothing more, nothing less. It targets young men.

The instant that Smells Like Teen Spirit was released, it was all over for Alternative Rock. The second nail in the coffin was Alanis Morrisette's massive record which pushed "alt" music in to the mainstream.

And as for 80's stuff, why is it that everyone believes that older alternative music fans want to hear tired retreads from the Smiths? Or the Cure? Or New Order, or any of that stuff? How Soon is Now was a great song when I was 19, and it's still a great song, but I really don't want to hear it anymore.

How is Edge a real/loud rock station? CFNY has never been a "real/loud rock station". There was a short period of time when it played bands like Metallica back in 1991, but they more or less play mainstream new rock.

Outkast did very well on the charts. It was an interesting and innovative song, and really didn't fit in a format.

Hey, I won't argue with you. I was a long time CFNY fan, I gave up on the station in approximately 1992.

But that's the point. I gave up, moved on, and found something else. Why people are still debating that CFNY was/is cutting edge is beyond me. They don't make much mention of their cutting edge sound, although they do try to sound like they are still the voice of the streets of Toronto.

Chasing their demo, Edge does a good job. They target young males. They play the music that young males want. Blundell is a perfect male jock sporto type with the lowest common denominator. Josie is the chick every guy wants to sleep with. Barry Taylor sounds like the dood you'd wanna "burn" with. As for Bookie, well he strikes me as the most human, "downtown" type (least in the white guy sorta sense)....the guy with a little CFNY in him.

My guess is that the former CFNY types listen to Matt Galloway down the dial at CBC Radio 1 and maybe throw in a CD. They aren't listening to the Edge, they haven't for years. There is a huge divide between the New Rock fan and the Indie Rock fan.

If you do like Indie Rock, Conestoga College Radio, CJIQ FM 88.3 is "Indie" from 7 AM to 6 PM and occassionally in the evening. No streaming, but if you're in range, you can still hear local, street level bar playing bands.

New Rock Hijacked Rock. Plain and simple.

"Lovefool" was played on Q92 Montreal when they were a CHR-leaning AC prior to '03.

And as for 80's stuff, why is it that everyone believes

As an older Alt. fan, I actually like to hear that stuff once in a while. Lord knows the "80's" stations won't play it (save for "True Faith" or "Love Song"), and frankly it beats the heck out of the Motley Crue/Def Leppard/Quiet Riot retreads on 103.3. I just wish they would stray away from the usual selections (How Soon Is Now, Blue Monday, Tainted Love, et. al.). Why not dig deep and suprise us once in a while? I bet they have The Flirts "Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime In)", but they only dust it off for "All Request Sundays".

Alt. gold selections can (and do) mesh quite well with today's indie/alt. offerings. Give me the new indie/alt. stuff, throw in a few choice (but out of the norm) classics (Pixies, anyone?), and don't be afraid of Electronica, and you'd have a fan. Call it "Active Alt.".

Today: heard, "love fool" cardigans..(now, not when is

Now if this were CFNY circa 1986, these seemingly out of genre choices would be par for the course. It wasn't unusual to hear Run DMC or Public Enemy
along side Depeche Mode or The Housemartins, which were part of it's charm as the Anti-Rock station. I suspect adding Eminem, Outkast, etc. is a nod to the past (albeit a non-effective one). It seems like a deparate attempt to not be the new Q107, which the Edge has now been for quite some time. They try not to be a "true rock station", but most of the time these days they sure sound like one.

While still better than most commercial Alt/New Rock stations (by never drinking the "Active Rock Kool-Aid" and playing Motley Crue, for example), Edge 102 is not and will never be as cutting edge as it once was.

>My guess is that the former CFNY types listen to Matt Galloway down the dial at CBC Radio 1 and maybe throw in a CD.

Speaking for myself (a former CFNY type), when in WNY and radio is my only option I still listen to Edge102 begrudgingly and Dave Marsden's show on 94.9. (WEDG has never appealed to me...too Limp Bizkit-y). At home my music listening is confined almost solely to XM Radio and an extensive, highly "Spirit Of Radio" influenced (for the older selections) CD collection. The FM radio doesn't get much use, although the old 8 track portable in my garage, tuned to the adequate local New Rock outlet, provides noise while I wash my car.

The things that killed alternative radio for me:

The cleansing of anything remotely electronic.
The corporate filters which strained out the imports, local, and new artists.
The mid-90's "Let's play anything from Seattle" mentality.
And absolutely worst of all:

When someone decided that Metallica was alternative.

I just grew tired of the entire "grunge" sound. Yes, I liked Nirvana, Pearl Jam's 10, and even 1 Soundgarden song, but ugh. It was non stop guitar rock. People talk of what a great band Nirvana was, but no one ever mentions that Nirvana was the nuke that wiped out "alternative" music.

I was reading shoutcast's TTSL on streaming radio stations. Some of the top stations are pushing out classic 80's alternative or new indie rock. And HUGE numbers considering there is no marketing, no glittering prises, no endless comprimises :?)
