Edie Adams has died at 81

Wow! Sorry to hear of this. Edie was a true lady and a very nicing looking one, too. It was good to see her on camera. After Ernie Kovacs was killed, she made sure all of his debts were paid off.

...one memorable cameo she had was in Cheech & Chong's Up In Smoke. Who'd ever have thought that the gene pool of Edie Adams and Strother Martin would produce Tommy Chong?!!? ;-) ...

Interesting that Kovacs was a spokesman for Dutch Master Cigars while his wife Edie was a spokeswoman for their main competitor..Muriel Cigars !!

The "going back to work to pay off the debts of the deceased" story has been also used in the case of Liza Minnelli & Judy Garland. When Garland died in 1969, like Kovacs she left a ton of debts. However in Garland's case it was Liza who went back to work to pay off her mother's debts. Now in the case of Edie & Ernie, I can see why the IRS was hounding Edie to pay off the debt since she and Ernie Kovacs were husband & wife at the time of Ernie's death. Now with Liza Minnelli, that one always had me stumped. The children are not responsible for the debt of their decesased parents, at least that is what I have been told over the years anyway. Maybe Liza wanted to "clear" her mother's name.

Edie Adams for Muriel Cigars - featuring the mildly suggestive tagline - "Why don't you pick one up and smoke it sometime?" That was meant to remind people of Mae West's line "Why don't you come up and see me sometime?".

There's a bit of irony in the cigar connection for both of them. Kovacs died after losing control of his car in a rainstorm. There was some evidence that he may have been distracted while trying to light his cigar.

Edie was great. Check out the link:

I was just a little boy when Ernie was killed in the car crash. I was devastated because for some reason his I "got" his humor (I was, also, reading MAD at the time). I remember my mother breaking the news to me, knowing I was a big fan. He was driving a Corvair - which fueled Ralph Nadar's campaign & helped put and end to the production of the vehicle. In a later interview, she said they had been to a party and had gone in separate cars. After a brief discussion, they decided she would drive the Rolls home and he would take the Corvair -which he liked. How things would be different if he took the Rolls Royce or if Corvairs had airbags. She was a beautiful and nice woman.
