EDITORIALS ON JENNIFER STRANGE

Though the Jennifer Strange tragedy doesn't have a direct impact on Pittsburgh radio, are there any local stations right now that are airing editorials acknowledging the tragedy?

Our stations are. Basically, we're expressing our thoughts and prayers for those affected by it, and assuring our own listening audience that we won't ever put them in harm's way by airing contests like this. What are your thoughts?

I think its sad she died. Especially since she had three children I think. I think it was a good decision for that station to fire the morning show especially since they blew off a nurse who called in and warned them. If I ran that station I would just bite the bullet and settle out of court and admit that they were wrong. I would also consider a new station name just to try and distance themselves from this event. It goes to show you how sick stations can be for publicity. The only stint that kind of relates to the one they did in California that they had hear in the Burgh was when B-94 had a "Submerge in Surge' Contest and listeners had to sit in small swimming pools of Surge and drink it in a race.

Kenhawk, are you a local DJ in Pittsburgh? I won't blame you if you keep your station a secret, though you can give hints and I can try to figure it out. Ha Ha.

Pardon my grammatical error. Four line: Hear is suppose to be here. I am starting to slip. AHH!

"Submerge in Surge", huh? Think of how many ways a contest like that could have gone awry. I agree with you...I think a format change would be inevitable in this case. The courts might even look favorably on it as a gesture of good faith from Entercom.

To answer your question, I did work in Pittsburgh for a little over three years in the early 90's at three different versions of 104.7. Now I'm in Butler County.

I agree, format change. We moved to Pittsburgh in 1999. I did a one month help out in about 1993 in Pittsburgh and found "The Rebel" 104.7, were you part of that? (Yes, I like rock and country). We live in Butler Co. now and know there's an FM station around 97.5 from Butler. Why don't they ever appear in the ratings, or what book would they appear in? (Assuming you know what station I mean).

Are you talking about WLER - FM, (All Hitz 97.7) I have a beef against them. haha. A kid I worked with at a station in Pittsburgh also works there and promised me at least an interview as a board op but I never heard anything. HAHA. It's okay. I can walk it off.

They are a good station though and have good people and I too always wondered why they never appeared in the ratings.

Yes, I am talking about AllHitz 97.7. Thanks for the compliments. As for why we don't appear in the ratings, we market ourselves to the suburbs, as opposed to Pittsburgh. The closest we come is the North Hills. Basically we serve every county that touches Butler County...that region. We're not a Pittsburgh station nor do we try to be.

As for your interview, all I can say is we have one of the most stable staffs you can imagine. It was tough for me to even get in here. Job vacancies are a rarity here...our people like working at our stations. But don't stop trying!

Yup, thats the station I was thinking of 97.7. Funny thing, this is how I found out about WLER. Neighbor wanted to hear BOB-FM and for some reason it scanned past 96.9 and stopped at 97.7. About an hour later, after a couple of brown pops, we were like what station is this? For that sort of a format, WLER really isn't bad. Thanks for clarifying why it doesn't appear in the Pittsburgh books.

I'm a neighbor to the North and can vouch for the good folks at WLER/WBUT/WISR. That cluster, IMO, represents the best of both local ownership AND industry consolidation. Every small town should be so blessed with radio done operated as such. Now, if I could just get a job there...hmmm....

We actually are looking for someone to do sales (and even those opportunities are rare), but as for on-air, there's about 150 years of combined experience among the airstaff. Unlike most operations that churn through their employees, working conditions are very pleasant, and it's a tight-knit family atmosphere.

You know, ten years ago, I would have jumped at the opportunity to escape the ever-replicating bacteria of Jacor/SFX/CC and return to "real radio". But, I made the mistake of taking a secure job in 1999 (with a pension to boot) that had some minor radio work tied-in - now I can't go back. So, although the radio bug continues to beckon me like a gold ring on a Hobbit, I have to take care of the family first and foremost.

I once heard Dolly Parton say in an interview that she always talks about her ideas with others. The reason being is that according to her, "I have a lot of ideas, and it's like having children, some of them are ugly but you don't notice it because they're yours!" My question in all of this, is where is the management who is supposed to be looking these things over?? Lots of jocks have lots of ideas. Some are good, some are ugly. You would think that a major promo to give away a Wii, would have needed input from the PD, GM and possibly GSM. So while this promo was working it's way thru the chain, were ALL of these people asleep??
How did this promo get the green light to start with?

They weren't asleep, they just weren't smart enough to know any better.

Everybody does stupid radio stunts. It never occurs to the people involved that someone might get hurt because its such a cool idea/the advertiser insisted on it/the GSM did it at his last job. Then when it goes horribly wrong everyone goes running for cover and the lawyers start scrambling for billable hours.

"As God is my witness Les; I swear that turkeys could fly."

Prior to this incident, how many of you asking about who signed off on the contest knew that drinking too much water could be fatal? If someone had run this idea past you in advance, would you have known that it involved a life-threatening risk?

That's a good approach, I like it. Just when I thought radio was going to hell in a speedboat! Nice to know there are some resposible broadcasters still around.

I have been in and out of radio for over 30 years. I still love it but I often wonder why?

What kind of work are you doing? It sounds nice. I have always wanted to find a related field. I went into IT which was good for awhile. Now every 10 year old is a computer expert!

I tried to break into Muzak since it's a little like radio. That is until I found out the company has been losing money for the past 11 years!

It's rare I get a chance to talk to the higher ups at my station since I just VT part-time. We had a good book and they invited all the jocks to dinner to celebrate. I asked our Operations Manager and he claims he runs all promotions right up the national corporate ladder to the legal department for approval.

I work in the only place in the world where people with no marketable skills and of minimal use to society on the whole can enjoy life-long employment: A college ;D
