EDM 10mw

I bought an EDM 10mw transmitter for expirimental purposes on Sunday and it arrived yesterday. After going through heck to soldier on the wires (not working, melting plastic all over the place by accident, and finally just busting the little adaptor clip also by accident) I took it down to a local Electronics Supply store and they helped me out.

Also, for anybody who decides to get one of these:

Make sure you insert the chips that you have to insert in the right way. I accidentally put the one in the wrong way and the transmitter would not turn on and it started to smell like it was burning. So watch out for backwards insertation.

Observations:

Sound Quality: GREAT!

No Drift Operation: As a former user of Ramsey FM10, THANK GOD

Coverage: Not too good compared to the Ramsey with the wire that came with it. So I plugged in my old Gizmo wire antenna and I got just below (Not too far, but below) the Ramsey had better coverage, amazingly considering how much of a frusterating piece of crap it was.

Legality: If you can legally use a Ramsey FM10 with 10mw, then you'll have no problem with this 10mw transmitter with less of a range.

Hum/Filtering: Its there, but nowhere near as bad as Ramsey without a filtered power supply.

Overall rating of EDM 10mw transmitter:

A- (For weaker coverage then Ramsey and the soldiering issue)
______________

It simply doesn't need anyother antenna other than is supplied with it. It is a superior product, beating any other product that came before it. If you use a different antenna, remember it is not like a wire AM antenna; there is no ground to it, so it has to be purchased or soldered correctly to work. Sound/range is superior to every FM part 15 I have ever tested. I stand by this product.
______________

The only thing I can think of that would change the coverage between EDM and Ramsey would be the fact that EDM is 50 ohm & Ramsey is 75 ohm. I do agree for some reason the Ramsey 10 covers better than the EDM 10 with the same antenna putting out about the same power, in fact the Ramsey 10 seems to cover better with the same wire antenna than my EDM 100 does But that is only when the Ramsey is on frequency, which is not very often.
Jeremy did you get your EDM with the case and power supply? I have one of my EDM’s right behind a computer monitor with no noise introduced, I can’t say the same for the Ramsey both using the same power supply. My EDM’s are in the stock case using the Philips switching power supply supplied by EDM.
Soldering on the EDM board can bring on a whole host of problems; it’s almost like soldering on a candy bar the traces seem to melt in your hand.
The new EDM transmitter is on it’s way with many changes including an LCD, variable power, and better filtering.

Carl,
Nice to have you back on board! Miss your insights and considerable wisdom.

I have purchased an FCC certified FM transmitter and will use a colinear vertical antenna which is made using segments of LM400 coax cables... should give me some extra boost in gain... without increase in output wattage.

I got mine with just the power supply. It goes nowhere compared to Ramsey using the same antenna I used with the Ramsey. The one that came with it is worse.

Of course mine is 10 mw. It would probably be different if I got the 100 mw one but I don't want to take any risks.
______________
