Eight Years Ago Today

Thanks for the reminder. I have that show on tape. It is my last tape to listen to, and I have not listened yet. Of course, it was reminiscing, not much if any music.

For those who do not know, Joe Donovan M-F Mid-5 AM on WHAS was their only music show and it was cancelled because of royalties that WHAS did not want to pay.

Joe Donovan's Rock And Roll Revival was the anitithesis of corporate consultants. He played all hits from the mid fifties to the seventies and a few eighties. His record collection numbered over 18,000 songs and he would play any by request on the following show.

The sweetest part of the show was between 3-4AM, "When the boss was asleep." Joe called that the Odd And Obscure Hour. He played lower charted songs and noncharted songs. For awhile, he even did a warped countdown on Friday mornings. He counted down the #90-100 positions on Billboard from a certain date. In other years he played unscoped airchecks of sixties radio on Friday mornings.

He always had many contests every hour. I used to win $10. every thirty days which was the limit. I also requested a song every night and he played it the next day.

Joe is retired and has converted his collection to MP3 and is selling off his records on ebay. I listened to him early mornings for 13 years. His show was a blast.

Nice memories. The show was certainly one of a kind. I had forgotten about those unscoped airchecks, but now remember what a bizarre experience it was waking up to that early one morning. I thought I was still asleep and dreaming. Also remember the War Of The Worlds broadcasts every Halloween.

I never won a contest, but Joe read a letter of mine on the air asking about a certain Christmas song I heard him play a couple nights before. Another listener called in and identified it as "Still, Still, Still" by Mannheim Steamroller.

You're lucky to have that last show on tape. But I do remember the final song he played was "Pilot Of The Airwaves." The only tape I ever made was a 30-minute segment from Christmas Eve 1996 which, of course, would turn out to be his last Christmas broadcast.

If I ever hear that Joe Donovan has a show on XM or Sirius, I would become a subscriber immediately!

I wish that would happen, but Joe has retired. I do not think that he wants to do any more radio shows.

Another good show was on Sunday night on KOMA called The Wax Museum. Larry Neal played about the same music that Joe played during Odd And Obscure Hour. It was a five hour show on Sunday nights. I have hundreds of hours of that show.
