EL PASO RADIO NEWS

I am considering an opportunity with an El Paso radio station but cannot find a topic here on this board about the market. What is the latest news? Please let me know. Would it be worth my while or should I pass?

El Paso is a good place to be from.......far from! I was born and bred there, and I love my hometown, but I realized at a young age, that if are ambitious you have to leave the market. El Paso has an isolationist mentality and is stuck in the past. The pay sucks, but hey, Chico's Tacos are the best!

I think it's something about the border markets. I had a great time down in McAllen/Brownsville but it's hard as hell to get out of there.

Yikes! But what about the radio clusters there? Maybe one is a shining star. Out of Clear Channel, Regent or Entravision - which is the best operation in town?

Now you are asking about the tallest midget in the room. Look, if you are starting out, or if you are unemployed and need a stepping stone, fine, but otherwise stay away from there. Just sayin'.

I did visit the Sun City and based on your recommendation actually ate at the Chico's Tacos over on George Dieter. They were much different than those served up at a Taco Bell. The place seemed to be extremely popular with local El Pasoans.

I was at the Chico's on Montana so much during high school, I could have gotten my mail there. Loved Chico's...and Leo's...and The Cattlemen's Steak Ranch.

Been awhile since I was there, so I can't comment on the present state of radio, but here's some of what I recall...

The pay sucks, but the cost of living is low enough to offset that fact to a degree. The people are great, and the food is really good. But El Gato is right...it is a stepping stone I had a great time there, but after a few years it was definitely time to move on.

It's sad, because at one time (late '60s-'70s) EP was considered one of the best medium markets in America. A direct stepping stone to LA, San Diego, etc.

Any thoughts on what happened, outside of the general gutting of all American radio by consolidators?

Consolidation did not happen until about 20 years after the time perido referred to.

What really happened was the rise of FM, meaning that instead of 5 or 6 viable AMs (excluding daytimers) there were 15 or 20 viable stations because of the FMs becoming competitive. Of course, 20 stations divided the revenue that 5 or 6 had divided before... and the budget for any one station shrunk.

I spent a year in El Paso. I really hated it. I mean don't get me wrong, I met some really cool people but it just wasn't for me.

It really is a beautiful city, but I was happy to leave it.

Also, I never understood the whole Chicos Tacos craze.

Just sayin....
