El Paso's KDBC/4 undergoes major staff cutback

the AP is reporting that due to an agreement with KTSM, nearly half of KDBC's employees will be cut. The story does not yet elaborate on how this will affect newsgathering or newscasts.

I saw a news story, can't remember where, regarding this issue about a month and a half ago. In fact, it may have been a YouTube video from KVIA. The writing was on the wall at the time, apparently. The same type of agreement is in place at KRBC/KTAB in Abilene, which used to be fierce competitors until KRBC fell upon hard times. Mission Broadcasting, KRBC's owner, entered into an LMA with NexStar, KTAB's owner, and most of the news staff from both stations were cut. It was not unusual for the same reporter to show up on both 6pm newscasts (although the stations kept their anchor staffs). A friend of mine who used to be sports director, later became news director, and is now sales manager said "things are pretty rough" (and this was a couple of months ago). I can imagine the same thing would happen at KDBC. More and more small- to medium-market stations will travel the same route, and it'll be a sad day in television.

Mission's contract with NexStar is fora different reason. All of NexStar's LMA'd stations are owned through "Mission Broadcasting."
Example: KAMR in Amarillo, and KAMC in Lubbock.

Same principle, but I believe its for a different reason than KDBC.

KDBC is a Pappas station, which explains everything. The place has been a mismanaged basket case for years. Remember the aborted plan to flip it to Azteca America?
