El Rushbo In Boise...

...moves in January from KIDO 580 to KBOI 670
(item published in R-I News this afternoon).

The KBOI website, which is already talking it up,
doesn't mention a specific air time, but it's a
foregone conclusion it will be live 10-1 MT,
especially since Hannity's on 1-4.

Will Dennis Miller (already on delay 10-1) be shifted
to late-night or dropped?

And...what does KBOI do with Paul Harvey which,
according to their website, interrupts Miller from
12-12:15?

The guess would be they air the 11:45 ET live feed
from 9:45-10 MT, at the end of their morning show.
No way they interrupt El Rushbo.

Peak's Press Release said:
KIDO TO REPLACE RUSH LIMBAUGH WITH LIVE/LOCAL PROGRAMMING AND LAUNCH AN ADDITIONAL KIDO RADIO CHANNEL AT AM 630 - Peak Broadcasting Making Twice the Commitment to Treasure Valley Listeners and Advertisers by Extending the KIDO Brand, Adding Additional Local Show Hosts, and Making a Deeper Investment in News and Sports Programming to Reflect a Growing Region. -

Boise, ID – October, 10, 2008 - Peak Broadcasting and 580 KIDO Radio announced today a series of significant programming changes designed to further strengthen the local commitment to the Treasure Valley and Idaho. National radio host Rush Limbaugh’s contract on 580 KIDO will not be renewed when it expires on December 31st 2008. In its place, beginning January 1st, 2009, 580 KIDO will debut a new LIVE and LOCAL radio show aimed directly at residents of Idaho and the growing Treasure Valley. Also, beginning Monday morning October 13th at 5am, additional KIDO branded radio programming will be heard on AM 630 and kidoam.com. KIDO AM 630 will continue to feature long time popular local hosts Jon Duane and Chris Kelly along with a significant increase in local news, sports, traffic, weather, and BSU programming all produced in house by the KIDO news and sports departments. Additional programming under the KIDO umbrella along with specific show times will be announced this Friday, October 10th. KIDO AM 580 or AM 630 will be the only radio stations in Boise to feature live and local news, talk, and sports programming throughout the day.

In making the announcement, Kevin Godwin, SVP/Market Manager of Peak Broadcasting/Boise said, “Although Rush has demonstrated his ability to attract a listening audience over the years for KIDO; we believe the future of local radio is local radio programming and services.” “Peak Broadcasting’s commitment to Idaho and the Treasure Valley has been demonstrated over the past 18 months by our dedication to provide only the best local personalities on all of our AM and FM stations.” He continued, “The KIDO project is a continuation of the initiative we started earlier this year with the acquisition of the radio broadcasting rights to Boise State University athletics, the successful launch of the Peak/Boise State University Sports Radio Network and the fast growing on line brand, www.kidoam.com.”

“The significant financial and political events of the past few months have clearly demonstrated the need for more timely, accurate, and credible local, regional and national radio information. We see an incredible opportunity to extend KIDO’s lead in quality branded news and personality content to more listeners and advertisers throughout the Treasure Valley and Idaho.” Peak Broadcasting was formed in 2006 to super serve local, growing communities throughout the western US. Peak develops market leading, creative, quality audio programming, breakthrough marketing, focused advertiser solutions, and innovative media technology. Peak Broadcasting operates leading Boise radio stations News/Talk 580 KIDO and now KIDO 630 (KFXD), 103.3 KISS-FM (KSAS), Lite 107.9 (KXLT), Mix 106 (KCIX), and WOW Country 104.3(KAWO). Peak has also operates the leading radio stations in Fresno California.

This is the stupidest, most dumb, beyond retard, inept move in Boise's radio history. This is what happens when you are unable to create and maintain two, distinct and diverse news/talk formats in a market the size of Boise. This is what also happens when you don't have the money to maintain a staff for two radio stations who formats are essentially the same, exact thing.

In 2002 when they made the call letter switch, it was for the preservation of moving the news/talk format to the 580 frequency. The 580 frequency has a stronger signal than the 630 frequency. The Clear Channel geniuses who made that switch did so to preserve Jon and Chris' position tied to the KIDO call letters. Then Jon and Chris bailed because of Clear Channel's wonderful management skills.

In comes the Peak group and they don't do anything about it. They tried to create and make 2 distinctive talk based formats. The effort was there but the KIDO call letters didn't follow Jon and Chris. The listeners have become completely trained to associate Jon and Chris with KIDO. Think about it, Jon and Chris were on KIDO from 1994-2006. It's only second nature to associate "KIDO" with "Jon and Chris". I'm pretty sure there's still hundreds of people who listen to 580 KIDO in Morning Drive, expecting to hear Jon and Chris without the knowledge of their show NOT being on the 580 frequency.

Kevin Godwin is finally starting to recognize this situation. While the idea of "All Talk 63 KFXD" was a very good idea, the image didn't register or stick with the listeners. The syndicated programming was weak at best. Peak was trying to attract the 25-54 age demo with "All Talk 63 KFXD" when most of use in that age range don't listen to the AM band.

For the record, The call letter switch was and is still a mistake and is a slap in the face to the history of Boise's radio frequencies, especially when it comes to the AM band. Apparently Peak's management doesn't care about Boise's radio history.

Now, from what I hear and my best estimations predict, the two stations, after Rush goes to KBOI in January, the stations will be airing the same programming on both stations at the same time. "AM Idaho" now being aired on 580 KIDO will air on both stations. Jon and Chris will move to 10am-2pm and be on BOTH STATIONS at the same time.

After Jon and Chris, the programming will split and return to syndicated programming on both stations.

After listening to the new 630 KIDO, I have to say I'm impressed. It's just different.

I like Dan Patrick but I don't know if he's going to work. I sure hope the payoff is for Jon and Chris to be Simulcast on both stations after Rush is gone from the 580 frequency.
