Elaine Keno on tomorrow's Radio Racket

Fresh off of her loss in court to KYW/CBS, Elaine Keno will be joining us tomorrow night at the top of the show (10pm) to talk about what she can about the case. While I don't think she'll being telling us who she thinks is the "biggest SOB in Philly radio", she's very excited to come on and talk about the business.

I'm sure we'll touch a bit on when the appeals will start and where this will all go from here.

Elaine Keno, Jim Nettleton, and oh yes, the book came out this week, so there's plenty to discuss! Hope to see you all tomorrow night at 10pm at radioracket.com

Interesting Kyle says "when" the appeals start and not "if"... We spoke earlier today but it didn't come up...

Looks like I'll actually have to do showprep for this one...

Just read Mikey Klein's lead...
Former KYW Newsradio anchor Elaine Keno plans to be going back to court, since a federal jury on Monday shot down key points of her lawsuit against the station.

Larry King doesn't do show prep. He just satisfies his own curiosity.
Stop imitating Fatso by asking questions - and interrupting answers - to show how much you already know.

This is going to be a big show tomorrow night.

Rrrealy big!
Rrrright here on our stage,
The Bolshoi Ballet
Bongo The Dancing Bear
Sophie Tucker
Buddy Hackett
For the kids, Senor Wences
And the Be'tles.

I had lunch with Senior Wences back in the early 80's. He was about 95, living on his own on the Upper East Side. After lunch, he drew "Johnny" on his hand and proceeded to go grocery shopping. (We were at one of those all-you-can-eat salad bar/bodegas). He was asking Johnny if he liked the produce. He was totally charming, sharp as a tack and nutty at the same time. He would have made a great program director.

Hell, when I'm 95 I hope I know what my hand is.

"Back in the box." Great memories, Fred. I also spent some time with Ed Sullivan (family friend) and was at many of his broadcasts. I always remember my Uncle George telling me not to mention the "medicine" smell on "Uncle Ed's" breath. One time, he had so much "medicine" that he inadvertently announced that "Joan Rivers" would be a guest on next week's show (instead of Johnny Rivers).

His staff had to scramble to get this relatively unknown, trombone playing, Borsch Belt comedienne on the show, so as not to admit that Ed might have been impaired. It was Joan Rivers’s first national exposure.

And just so this thread doesn't get moved for breaking topic; I have read a great deal about the Elaine Keno case. I hope she nails the bastards on appeal.

That's great. And now we know ----- the rest of the story.
Long distance information, give me Brooklyn.

Some interesting stories about Sullivan and his feud with Winchell in Neal Gabler's Winchell bio.

Amen. If she does nail the bastards, she does it for all of us. I've experienced some dysfunctional workplaces and bosses, but some of the stories about KYW make me shudder.

As Julius reminds us, it is not the class-act station it once was. But apparently there have been problems on Independence Mall for some time. I recall a Philly mag story about Mort Crimm and Jessica Savitch being under court order to go to work.

Julius and Fred mentioned that KYW isn't the "class act" station as it used to be. I agree with them on that topic. I listen to KYW at night when driving home from work (when I can hear the station...some nights aren't as good as others). I also listen to them when I am in the Philadelphia area visiting family and friends. I have to agree the talent level and writing skills aren't as good as they used to be. I'm not saying I could do any better, but I know that the station doesn't sound as what I was used to growing up. I don't mean to sound like I'm criticizing everything they do...because they are in Market 4, and I'm not...so who am I to say anything, right?

Unfortunately, the reason this station isn't as it used to be is simply because of the folks at the Corporate level. It's not just at KYW, but all over the Broadcasting spectrum (radio and television). The money they are offering may be much less than years ago...in turn, lower salaries bring in less-experienced talent...and it shows when you listen to what's coming out of the radio.

At KYW, Mr. Butler may be part of these unfortunate situations, but I would strongly assume he's following orders from his bosses. It all trickles down from the top, as far as budgets, union negotiations, hiring and firing employees, and so forth. It all comes down to the All Mighty Dollar. Broadcasting companies seem like they don't want to spend the dollars to get the experienced talent their stations deserve. Mr. Butler has to do what he's told to do by his bosses. I don't know exactly what's going on over at 5th & Market. I've never worked there...nor do I know anyone who works at KYW Radio. The only information I know is from reading this forum so far...thus ascertaining an opinion/comments from there.

Mort Crim and Jessica Savitch had a court order against them to go to work? I never heard of that story before. That's interesting that a court would force someone to go to work. Isn't it usually the other way around?

I wish the best of luck to Ms. Keno in her legal battles with the station. I hope things turn out to be in her favor some day. I'm sure they will.

Everyone, please tell your friends to listen to the show tonight.

And I'm sure you'll be telling your fr--- ugh, oh, never mind...

How come nobody posts after the show?

Program announcements from the producer. Insults from the host. Fans excited about the upcoming show.
But everybody gets quiet after the show.
Anticipations of breaking news but nobody ever comes back and says - wow - news broke.
Nobody comes back to say the interview was great or the interview sucked.
Maybe all these people who say they are going to listen, don't.
Or maybe they listen for a while and fall asleep.
If the show lived up to the hype, you'd think there would be a lot more post-show buzz.
Nope. Only pre-show buzz.

The same certainly can't be said for RJ's little show, can it? ::)

Fred,

For sake of full disclosure, I am a contributor the Radio Racket and very proud of that fact.

That being said, check out most of the threads on all the boards. Virtually no one extols the virtues of any radio show. While there are a few exceptions, most posts criticize, ask questions or both. Why would the Radio Racket be any different?

Unlike the supposed letters to Radio Havana, like the ones from Tom in Des Moines, who writes, "I love your show, really hate capitalism and would love to move to your country," few people in radio take the time to say anything nice about a show post-mortem. When I occasionally do, you delight in "outing me" as someone who has done TV infomercials, which, by the way, I have never denied. By the way, my two most recent infomercials have afforded me the luxury of working in radio for the rest of my life if I so choose.

Yes, people are excited about the Radio Racket before a show. George and Kyle are breaking new ground on the Internet. With the millions of radio geeks across the country, to the best of my knowledge, they are doing the only Internet radio show about radio in the country, perhaps the world. The two interviews with Elaine Keno and Jim Nettleton this week were masterful and extremely entertaining. I would not be surprised to see the show picked up by satellite (possibly terrestrial) radio in the near future.

So a few dedicated fans jump on the bandwagon and hype the show a little. Who are they harming?

I wish you well in your life and career.

Steve

Fred -

I think there are simple reasons to why there isn't 'post-game' discussion, some of which Steve has already mentioned.

Our show is on Friday night. Weekends are notoriously slow on the message boards. I think it's that elementary.

I thought a lot about your post last week asking why I don't put up a recap after every show, but besides lack of time, I guess I don't want to be perceived as 'blowing my (our) own horn'. I think we're putting on a very good show. The show is evolving and improving all of the time. Our listenership is growing, so we must be doing something right.

I think Steve hit the main point though. Other than a few fanatics who come here to extole the show's they chose to champion, there isn't really any conversation about specific programs, let alone specific 'episodes' of those programs.

Insults from the host.

I'm not sure what you were alluding to there. Are you saying that George comes on the boards and insults people? When?

The same certainly can't be said for RJ's little show, can it?

There is no show on the radio that is funnier than RJ's. Unfortunately for RJ, it's funny for the wrong reasons. If we didn't talk about it, it would fall into the radio abyss, which would be a damn shame.

Translation: People have lives. (Note this only applies to the boldfaced statement above, and not the one regarding the show.)

Probably alluding to the whole Julius brouhaha here earlier this week, but I could be wrong. In that case, however, an eye for an eye...
