Election Coverage On ENC Or Lack Of??

In a dial scan I found some local election coverage on WPTF and WSFL..That's all I heard..Maybe I missed some but overall local radio dropped the ball in my opinion..
What a tremendous opportunity for station to grab some local business...One of the most talked about events in history and the local talk stations don't do coverage..Again If i missed something my fault, but my goodness.I can't believe what I didn't hear...I don't care if there are 10,000 other sources for coverage..Someone should be out locally doing reports, updates etc...Do this bother anyone else or just me.....I don't understand....

Particularly in light of recent discussions on how small, local stations can build audience in this competitive era.

You're dead on, Mike. An excellent point...and timely, too. Sometimes the answers are right in front of us.

I didn't listen to all of it, but from what I heard, the Curtis folks did a fine job. It is nice when you can combine the staffs of all of your radio stations, and the State Government Radio crew and provide solid coverage to multiple markets!

Don has always been dedicated to serving the communities in which his station exist and has always been personally involved. He has a passion for radio that many of you on this board have. While you may not agree with his style or all of the company's policies, you have to give them credit for being good, local broadcasters!

We could use more of that passion in the industry. (Yes, it is possible to be passionate about radio AND count the beans, too.)

WPTF did a great job as usual...I guess the biggest suprise was WTIB..Its been 90% politics for the last year on Talk of The Town and then as far as I know they didn't do anything on election night..They have the relationship with WPTF
through the Inner Banks deal..I would have thought they would have at least partnered with them to do some local stuff...Strange....

Allen

Yes it is strange that there was little local coverage. I didn't listen much to anything since I was working on my computers and listening to that but yesterday morning on Jammin 99 they talked about the election and I heard a little bit on The Big Dawg last night but other than that there was nothing mentioned locally.

On this thread no one has bashed anyone..I hear that someone feels I bashed them on this thread...I did not bash anyone I simply made a statement. If you have something to say join the board and let's disscuss it.Its a shame that we can't have opinions without people getting their noses out of joint...People love to express their opinions on the air and on the net in blogs and such but if I express mine I have to hear about it...Let's all be adults here OK???

I personally don't see any real bashing here in any statement you have made Allen. Other than the comment of WTIB and that really wasn't bashing it was merely making a statement or an observation that

. I agree with you though it seems we (you and I) cannot express our opinions here without problems. I think those that have problems with things said here need to actually READ what is posted rather than taking it out of context or from a he said/she said environment. I'm tired of being afraid of making comments here for the off board conversations and accusations. IF you disagree with anything said on thses boards then sign up and discuss it like adults should or PM the individual and discuss the problem privately. Allen is a personal friend of mine and when he is attacked for no real reason I take real offense to that because I don't like to see my friends upset. I hope this can be a place where we discuss the industry we all love radio, but if it cannot be an enjoyable place to visit then there is no point in having it. I would hate to see this board disappear.

Thanks John...I am not here to upset anyone but Iam not going to tippy toe in my posts in fear of upsetting a very very small minority who to love to dish
opinions but can't take them.. I am putting this issue to bed once and for all and look forward to some great disscussions in the future...

Allen

I guess what I don't understand is why give print space to someone who isn't man or woman enough to respond to an broadcast observation made on this board...a board, I might add, that exists expressly for radio discussion and, DUH, observations?

I wouldn't sweat it, Allen. You must have spoken the truth if you got someone's ass up on their shoulders.

You're most welcome my friend.

On Tuesday morning Henry said on his show that they were going not going to do election night coverage since they are not very well equipped to cover national elections. Normally they do cover election night locally.

I was in Charlotte last night at a candidate's celebration (although it ended up not being a celebration). Every market except Greenville and Wilmington was represented. WLOS/Asheville, all three Triad news stations, and all three Triangle stations had reporters. Most everyone was doing live cut-ins.

I know people these days (yes, people who live in Greenville) who won't watch anything but WRAL for news. Can you blame them? I'm quickly becoming one of those people... at least it's actually that, NEWS. Even if our local stations couldn't do a live feed, they could have sent someone down who could file a report the next day.

Yeah, I know this is about radio, but our TV is just as bad. If the TV stations won't even cover stories you can't expect the radio stations to.

The local stuff is what I was looking for..I just assumed they would have someone
at some HQ's and at the polls with a cell phone doing call ins at least..I was dissapointed when I heard Savage only and some show from September was on Cable 7..They had done so much in previous years I figured they would do it again.

I don't mind bashing. For a news-talk station to NOT provide coverage of local elections is just uncalled for. How can they not have resources for national coverage - do they not have a news network?

I am curious, did John Hood (John Locke Foundation) and Bill Campbell do anything this time around? What about NCNN?

I didn't know NCNN ever did live coverage of anything. I did see one of their field guys at the event I was at, so they were at least getting their own audio for it and not using WRAL's.

Did you mean Tom Campbell or Bill Campbell? Bill is at Y102.9, Tom is the NC SPIN guy.

Sorry, Tom Campbell. For several years he and Hood, and Chris Fitzsimons joined forces to provide some good state-wide coverage. Distributed by Capitol.

Just for the record, WAAV 980 in Wilmington did do local election coverage on
Tuesday Evening, in addition to reports from CNN radio and the North Carolina
News Network, in addition, WECT did cut-in's during NBC's coverage, and so
did WWAY, doing reports at the top and bottom of each hour, as for WILM,
even though WWAY produces at 7pm News for them Weeknights, used WRAL
from Raleigh(which they air other newscasts from) it was interesting that
for about the first 90 minutes while CBS had there election returns, they
pre-empted them and carried a feed from the WRAL NewsChannel.
A footnote to my reply, i'm sure WNCT, WITN and WCTI did reports during
their network coverage, but it's disturbing that stations like WTIB didn't
bother to put a team together for local election returns, this would have
been a good opportunity for Henry Hinton and Inner Banks Media to get
some attention, because their ratings need a boost right now.
Meanwhile did the talk outlet in Morehead City do anything?

A combination of NCNN,WPTF and some local perspective of political opinion would have made for very informative and I would think very sellable coverage. It would be sucking that last dollar out of the political stuff for a while since the ads
from the candidates went away..I was looking forward to it..I actually set the DVR to record because my son had a soccer game...Instead I get some show with Renee McCoy from Channel 5 that was obviously a couple of months old..I set the
stereo to record the audio and got Mike Savage doing what he does.. Quite a disservice to the audience in my opinion... but hey maybe next time..

What channel was that on? WRAL carried CBS on 5.1 and did local coverage for about 6 hours straight on 5.2.
