Eli Wallach passes away

Need to note the passing of the great actor Eli Wallach at age 98. He was primarily a film and stage actor, but also did a fair amount of TV work - most recently in an episode of Nurse Jackie (2009). He did an amazing amount of work during the last decade, considering he was in his mid 90s. In the previous decades, he guest startted in Murder She Wrote, Highway to Heaven, among others. Going back, you can find credits for guest roles in Kojak in the 70s, The Naked City in the 60s, and in the early days of TV in anthology shows such as CBS Playhouse, and the Dick Powell Theatre, and Playhouse 90.

I guess this is an Eli Wallach story, except it isn't. An acquaintance of mine, a woman who grew up in her father's 16mm film equipment business, told me about a friend of her dad's. His name was Joe Claire, and he was sales manager for AAP, the company that for years sold Bugs Bunny cartoons and other films in 16mm and 8mm to camera shops and film libraries. Mr. Claire visited her family often and was like a favorite uncle to her.

The thing was, he was a virtually perfect look-alike for Eli Wallach! People would often stop him and ask for an autograph, and wouldn't accept his explanation that he was really Joe Claire, who sold cartoon films for a living. Sometimes they became quite angry about it! Finally, just to keep the peace, he'd just smile and shrug, and sign "Eli Wallach" so they'd walk away happy. Wonder how many Eli Wallach autographs out there are really genuine Joe Claires?
