Elis Cannon... we miss you!

Listenning to halftime tonight on the Steelers Radio Network... not nearly as tight, professional and authentic. This guy sounds like people I heard on the college radio station when I went to school!

I hardly ever watch the Steeler preseason games let alone listen to them on the Radio. I'll get back to you when the season starts.

E is an attorney by trade. He had no formal background or training in radio so far as I know, until he and his brother decided to become Sports Talk Moguls a decade ago. For what it's worth.

Last season the Wheeling Nailers lost their play-by-play guy to a higher level team shortly before the season began.
I don't know who that was they threw on the air to replace him, but he would have made your college radio guy sound
polished by comparison. He went into total crack-up mode. Have never felt so bad for anyone on the air before.
He was gone before the snow flew.

Re: Ellis Cannon... we miss you!

Ellis clearly was an acquired taste as host of "Sportsline Pittsburgh." Still, it is strange that a station that offers "more of the conversation you want" has found enough reasons to run sports talk at 6 p.m., first in a baseball pre-season series then in a Steeler pre-season series that had to be sold (and certainly was in terms of the Steeler series).
Also, I'm surprised that "E" hasn't turned up much since losing his contract with Clear Channel Pittsburgh. (I admit I have not had a chance to see him on PCNC.) Perhaps his paper in Duquesne keeps him busy enough, perhaps he's found he doesn't really need to give 10-plus hours a week over to studio work.

And perhaps there's another reason....

I was not a fan of Elis. It is hard to believe Greg was the best they could do

I think what the problem is - is that most people in radio are so afraid that someone else is going to take their job that they never train anyone to take their place.

Then, when they get too old to do it anymore, or they die, there is no one to take their place. We had people in the 70's that everyone despised such as Howard Cosell and Myron Cope and no one really appreciated the fact that they actually knew the game. No one had the foresight to realize that some day these people will be gone - be it because the fans requested it - like Howard, or that the person could no longer do it anymore like Myron.

Every 5 years it seems the generations change.

I graduated from high school in 1982 and over the years, I have repeatedly seen things go from bad to worse to terrible in the last 30 years.

I'm not a racist, but I think that it is wrong to have sportscasters involved in every sport - that are hired because of their color and not because of their knowledge. We keep lowering our standards for broadcasting to the point of public opinion - until we get to the point of where no one wants to listen to it anymore.

The Penguins getting rid of Mike Lange is one good example.
Even when they tried to bring him back for a Stanley Cup game his charm was gone..
I guess we got to get used to things not being good or exciting anymore.

The Penguins didn't get rid of Mike Lange. They hired him for radio when FSN dropped him from TV. He's done the full seasons on radio for the past several years.

A friend of mine came back to town and was disapointed to not hear Ellis on the radio. He asked me where he was.

I had no answers, but I would say that in the current environment his sudden return might not be promising.

Oh, mind you, I think there are worse talk shows on the air right now than the ones Ellis Cannon hosted. But it would seem to be unlikely he'd return to Clear Channel as that was the outlet that said they no longer desired his services.

My guess is they caught wind of CBS Radio's plans for 93.7 when they let him go and realized that Rocco could handle their Pirates commitments, but they might be better off to have 104.7 focus on their bread and butter- political talk- rather than pay for a full time sports talk show host to go up against the plethora of options fans would already have.

Unfortunately for Ellis, if he wanted to return to 1250, they were in the process of cutting talent (Eartha Jackson, Joe DeStio, Eddy Crowe) instead of putting on a high priced talent. Young talent like Ken Laird and Chris Mack not only had been on the payroll for awhile but would also cost less. No place for him there.

Then there's "The Fan," but in hindsight we can now see the staff of this station was largely comprised of some of the holdovers from KDKA-AM when they had sports talk (Paul Alexander, Ron Cook), guys who were considered rising or established stars with CBS, and people who would work for scale or thereabouts. Throw in Joe Starkey, who I'm guessing would ask for a little less money with his column for the Trib paying him a full time salary (I presume) than Ellis would, and Jim Colony, who unlike Ellis Cannon is less likely to vie for the "lead" role of the morning show and instead plays the rather important role of allowing his co-hosts to shine, and Ellis, at least for the time being, just doesn't have a place.

Perhaps that will change in the future. Or perhaps Ellis could reinvent himself as sort of a Phil Musick-type host on a general talk station. I think he'd do well.

But that's my take on why sports fans no longer can hear what to many was their favorite host.

From what I've heard you're pretty much on target there.

Presumably it would be for the Pittsburgh Sports Report.

Interestingly, 1250 is now running a Pittsburgh Sports Report program on the weekends, but Tony DeFazio
is hosting. I presume that means the Mouse objected to Ellis coming back on-air?

I am not sure if the two are related, I haven't caught the show. I do know that Ellis is doing a "business of sports" type piece that runs on KQV and apparently is also working on a broadcasting program for students with the PA Cyber Charter School.

I'm all for energy and good pacing, but Ellis on PCNC needs to slow it down. He looks and sounds like he's just had two pots of coffee with a Red Bull chaser.
