When I saw this announcement I groaned. Tom Glasgow is a very weak personality in anything more than small doses (he's an absolutely abysmal sports play-by-play guy, for instance). I didn't enjoy the couple of times I heard him with Jane Shannon, and she had a long career as an all news drive time anchor.
Jaffe, on the other hand, is a KOMO lifer who has been around the block and done a little of everything at KOMO. But her longest role... host of the extremely fluffy Northwest Afternoon. Her stints as an anchor on KOMO have all been short-lived. She also has little radio experience, save for her year or so hosting a fluffy morning show on KVI. Jaffe's appointment just seemed like a way to shift a salary around, rather than actually go out and hire someone new.
However, since I'm living out of market, I decided to reserve my judgement until I could hear them together. I listened during PM drive a couple of days last week and was shocked to think they sounded good together. Glasgow wasn't as bad as I'd imagined and Jaffe was actually pretty good.
Additionally, I was encouraged to hear some new voices throughout the news department. Pete Combs, who was at WSB Atlanta and frequently filed for CBS Radio's Hourlies has replaced Jon Repp in one of the AM drive reporter roles. On again off again KIRO anchor and editor Jeff Pohjola is also kicking around. Bill Swartz is working as the "Huskies reporter" and also anchoring some sportscasts during the midday... he's a tremendous talent.
When Sinclair picked up KOMO, they made major cuts to KOMO radio. Its nice to see a little investment in the product, hopefully an investment that keeps the product competitive.
