Elizabeth Pena - RIP

I was sad to hear about the passing of the talented Elizabeth Pena, at age 55. Way too young! She was never a big star - after headlining the shortlived I Married Dora sitcom in the 80s, about a green-card marriage, she settled into a succesful career as a character actor in films and TV. She most recently appeared in episodes of Modern Family as the mother of Gloria (Sophia Vergara).

"I Married Dora" did a couple of humorous things. First, when somebody notified ABC that marrying an illegal alien for the purpose of avoiding deportation is itself illegal, the network put up a disclaimer of the "don't try this at home" type. The marriage went ahead anyway. Then, on the last show, Daniel Hugh-Kelly's character, Peter Farrell, had taken a job in Bahrain and Dora begged him not to go. He got on the plane anyway, and then got right back off. What happened next may not rank with the "Newhart" finale, but Brooks and Marsh thought it a great way for a failed show to end:

PETER: It's been canceled.
DORA: The flight?
PETER: No, our series!

The camera then pulled back to show all the cast and crew waving to the audience.

Unfortunately, not many people saw that episode; it might have been a memorable moment in Elizabeth Pena's career.

Now that you jog my memory, I can remember seeing that episode. IMO, I Married Dora wasn't a great show. I watched it because I liked Pena, and she was good in the show, but her work since Dora was top notch. I found the opening sequence on YouTube. I had forgotten Juliette Lewis was on the show. Also Henry Jones - a great character actor.
