Ellen DeGeneres Named New "Idol" Judge

Okay... I take back a statement I made about a year ago about "American Idol" jumping the shark as soon as they added a fourth judge in Kara Dioguardi.

I believe that THIS is now the point where "Idol" jumps the shark - by appointing Ellen as a new judge to replace Paula Abdul!

She has reportedly inked a five-year deal to be a judge on the show. Yeah, okay... We'll see if the show is still on the air after the next three seasons!

In fairness, I think Ellen did well as a co-host for the "Idol Gives Back" specials that they did (no such show this year due to the recession). But exactly how much credibility does she have as a legitimate music critic? She's a comedian!

Full story, with press release:

I think that's the whole point. She's NOT a music critic. I personally think it might just bring some live back into the show. The usual Simon, Paula and Randy antics have gotten very old. Now, about replacing Ryan Seacrest..... :)

That would be virtually impossible, considering he now holds down about 57 jobs at this point...

No offense to Ellen, but I hope that this is what finally kills this ridiculously overrated show! Everyone who wins expects instant stardom, but so far, only Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have been able to do that. (Clarkson was first season, but Underwood was probably a fluke, or simply had enough talent to overcome the inevitable.)

At any rate, aren't the more recent "winners" of this show aware of the law of diminishing returns?

C'mon, Daughtry has become the most suceessful. Think before you post . But that's not what I came about...it's Ellen. One of the several recycled stars that is on every show. But look at it this way....if she passed, we would have had Rosie. or Whoopie. The same recycled stars we have shoved down our throat day in day out. Did I miss anyone else that would fit that agenda. Can't use Ryan, he's already on there.

Now Ellen falls from the C-list to the D-list. Guess her talk show isn't doing too well.

Her talk show is doing just fine. She's poised to move into the #1 rated talk show slot whenever Oprah retires.

Oprah will never retire. Doesn't she hold a press conference every year just to announce she isn't retiring???

With 4 judges last year, Idol had time issues quite often. They should have stuck with three judges. They could have dumped Randy and put Ellen in his place.

Lets just hope Ellen doesn't do any of that annoying "dancing" that she does on every show, out in the audience and with every guest that comes on. That white bread dancing with Barack Obama was enough. She needs to leave the dancing to the profesionals. On a dancing show.
