Ellen out at Idol

Meanwhile, rumored to be a new "Idol" judge include the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and Steven Tyler. (Yes, that Steven Tyler. That would make "Aerosmith Week" on the show awkward. ::) )

Note that they plan to hire only one new judge, as Simon and now Ellen are moving on, so they will be going back to the three-judge format.

It's become the grand-daddy of this kind of show. However, other than Carrie Underwood, the winners haven't had the kind of careers one might hope for, given the hyper-attention they received for a few months. But I guess that's par for the course in artist development. Once the show's over, they move on to the next big thing, and the previous year's winner is forgotten.

Replacing Simon will be tough. Unlike the other judges, Simon wasn't an artist, but a label person. That's what's missing from the panel now. Someone who can think about making a commercial superstar and not just picking the best or most popular karaoke singer. Then again, that kind of person seems to be missing from the music industry. Which may be why they're having so much trouble finding someone. They can promote the flavor of the month, but no one's building long term careers.

Perhaps the least discussed aspect of this fallout is whether or not the traffic at votefortheworst.com will rebound.

Yeah yeah yeah, lots of folks have had success besides Carrie: Bo Bice, Kellie Pickler, on and on. Sure sure sure. I get it.

That's not my point. The point is you need someone on the judging panel who can throw the bucket of ice water on the contestant. Ellen couldn't pull the trigger. Neither could Kara. I don't think any artist can do this job. My personal vote is Bob Lefsitz, bit that's never gonna happen.

The LA Times had an interesting idea: Make a music critic a judge:

That's not gonna happen either. Who needs critics?

They need a celebrity who knows music and wouldn't be hurt by being negative.

As one who has never seen a single "American Idol" I have come to the conclusion, based upon all the commentary everywhere, that the program is probably not slated to last much longer and has probably outlasted its time.

People take themselves and their talents too seriously, and they give themselves too much credit for any success they achieve. This includes those who judge the contestants.
