Elliot Wiser leaves BN9 for WTSP

I don't watch TV or have cable, but I catch BN9 at work sometimes. I actually feel like they've gotten better than they were when I had cable 5 years ago. They run too many fluff stories for my taste, but I think old people like that stuff. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what, if any, changes are made at channel 10.

I see nothing wrong with a local news station covering a person being hit by lightning as breaking news. There's a whole lot of lightning popping off out there right now, people should take it seriously.

Hey, CC....You're forgetting that Bay New 9 is carried in Manatee County and that's a great story for them to cover. They'd be useless if all they ever talked about were things happening in Tampa. You can't be a respected regional news source if you act like that.

Quite the contrary... from what I heard when the announcement was made, most of the BN9 (and especially the BHSN) staff was so giddy they couldn't contain themselves. I don't know what the future holds for BN9 but I know there was a lot of tension at Carillon the previous couple of years with him there.

As for BN9 coverage, yes occasionally the "breaking news" comes from left field, and from a technical standpoint we in the industry will criticize the canned clock, but as for news I have found BN9 delivers more news that a lot of stations-- especially in morning drive. Instead of promoting that night's network reality show, I know I will get traffic, weather, and a few headlines in 10 minutes when I wake up. That's more than most of the TV morning shows and without a doubt much more than local radio. The TV ratings show it too-- early morning people are tuning in to BN9. The shift to channel 13 doesn't happen until the 7 o'clock hour.

I've had professional dealings with him in the past ... somewhat limited, but certainly unpleasant. It does not surprise me in the least to hear this.

Having gone back and forth from Verizon to Brighthouse (why is it the intro offer is always better for new subscribers than long time loyal customers) however, I digress. Been watching the Zimmerman trial on Bay News 9. Very obvious that they don't do live very well. It is my understanding that all the regular news and weather reporting is recorded. The Zimmerman trial of course is live with in-studio cut aways and some have been sloppy.

Frank, I've felt...watching this happen...that the breaks are computer controlled and for this trial they have to have a human there to switch back to the trial as immediately as possible once a spot fires. Same thing thirty seconds later and so on for each one through what would have been a scheduled break. It's sloppy but probably makes more sense than reprogramming everything for the trial.

They've done an absolutely stellar job of covering the resignation of Education Commissioner Bennett this morning: not acknowledging it or putting it on their "breaking news" scroll at the bottom, both of which their Orlando counterpart Central Florida 13, has done.
