Elon Musk To Host SNL

Elon Musk is under fire for his rants over the COVID-19 vaccine before he appears on SNL.

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has become known for his eclectic and often controversial remarks. He has faced backlash over his comments about the COVID-19 pandemic. He has spoken out about national stay-at-home orders, comparing it in a tweet to "de facto house arrest." He downplayed the risk of the novel coronavirus and said he would not get the vaccine for it in an interview with journalist Kara Swisher on an episode of "Sway," a podcast from The New York Times.

However, this month Musk said on Twitter that he supports "vaccines in general & covid vaccines specifically."

...but to be fair, he did come out with a Tweet a few weeks ago in full support of vaccines, and even downplayed the minor risks of side effects.

Who knows why the powers that be at SNL chose Musk. Maybe they thought he'd be an interesting choice, especially since he's done so much with Tesla, SpaceX, the The Boring Company tunnels, etc., when major car manufacturers and oil companies had repeatedly tried to shut down the idea of affordable and mass-produced electric cars and he doesn't use the traditional dealership model to market and sell his vehicles, NASA traditionally had a lock on the space program, etc. He also tends to be outspoken and ends up in the news every several months.

That said, he's hardly the first somewhat controversial figure to be on the show. Donald Trump certainly wasn't a popular choice, and way back when, Sinead O'Connor tore up a picture of the Pope after exclaiming "Fight the real enemy!". When Andrew Dice Clay was to host, at least 1 female cast member boycotted that week's program completely. There have also been a handful of guest hosts or musical acts that were banned from ever returning to their stage, either because they were difficult to work with and treated others on the show poorly, or because of something that occurred during their time there.

It will be a train wreck.

That's what they want. Otherwise it's just more predictable Pablum.

Here's what cast member Pete Davidson said after having dinner with Musk this week:

Or people will tune out in 15 minutes.

I'm guessing it'll be uneventful. While at times eccentric and Musk sometimes makes comments that end up making headlines, he's obviously not a dumb guy with all he's accomplished, and he's had plenty of exposure to the media and time in front of cameras. I think unless he chooses to take it off the rails at some point, it'll be a pretty standard SNL episode, with some skits and segments better than others.

Preliminary ratings say that Elon Musk's appearance on SNL was a hit:

Third highest ratings of the season, and a huge improvement over the last few weeks.
He wasn't a great host. Sure it wasn't Trump level bad but he wasn't good.

Great or good, bad or awful, is subjective. It was noticeable they began with the musical guest as a change. Mother's Day, sure, but a bit of a change and a nice one in some ways.

Purely subjectively, it wasn't a train wreck from my vantage point. They played to what they had, and whether or not I enjoyed any of the skits (most of them were a hard no personally), that wasn't tied to Musk, just as they aren't tied to any of the guests most weeks.

Ratings were good, got some attention. Show didn't go off the rails. Mission accomplished.

On to next week.
