Elvis Duran Headed to 105.7 The Groove

The Groove is running a promo saying, "Elvis is coming."

That can mean only one thing. Elvis Duran & the Morning Show, one of Clear Channel's hallmark syndicated products, will be 105.7 The Groove's morning show. Duran is based at Z100 in New York and aired in Philadelphia, Miami, Cleveland, Tampa and about 20 smaller markets.

This comes as absolutely no surprise.

Another syndicated morning show, that always works out so well. Remember Bob & Tom? (Damn, I forgot to list that on my top Atlanta Radio Stories for 2000's.) The only thing that could make it better is if 105.7 were owned by Clear Channel. Oh wait, it is. </sarcasm>

BTW, Roddy, check out your posts, it looks like a milestone is fast approaching.

Footy!!! Love Athletes Foot. And has anyone heard Elvis' morning show? I can't quite understand why it's in so many markets. Hacky parodies and giggle boxes for his jokes... Ugh... I'd rather hear Tripp in morning drive.

Footy, haven't heard that name in years. I grew up in South FL. listening to Sonny Fox and Footy on Y-100. Great talents.

Bob and Tom, MJ, Big D and Bubba...

Clear Channel will just keep hucking syndicated shows into Atlanta until something sticks.

You love Footy? That explains why you are so critical of the Elvis Show. It's way tooo young for you. Seriously, based on your description, you haven't really listened to it. They don't use giggle boxes and rarely play parodies. When they do, they are top notch and timely. Mostly, the show is pop culture, demo based and features great talk topics and fun content. Not sure what show YOU are describing but you clearly are not the target demo. They seem to be doing well in many big cities and very different markets Them coming to Atlanta could be a very god thing for their target audience. From the numbers, they crushed the numbers your boy Footy was getting in Miami.

Let us all lay at the alter of Elvis Duran and praise him until the cows come home. Yeah this will be such very good thing for the target audience. Blah, Blah, Blah. He will fail like the rest of the carpetbaggers.

The more I think about this, the worse it gets. The Elvis Duran show is just one long continuation of what Scott Shannon(Mr. True Oldies himself) started. This show has its roots in the original Z100 Morning Zoo. That Shannon started back in the 80's. It was a cast of changing personalities with the name Zoo thankfully being dropped.

Elvis Duran should start this Friday, on what would have been the much more talented Elvis' 75th birthday.

Yeah...I guess that's why he has been super successful in his other big cities. Atlanta is SOOOO different. Lst I checked, Bert isn't from Atlanta. We'll see.

Why do you make posts if you don't know what you are talking about? The current show is nothing like Scott's show from the 80's or his current show. 2/3's of the morning shows in America are based on the "Zoo" formula Scott helped create. Tons do well. Elvis' show has largely evolved from that old format and continues to succeed for 14 years in the biggest and toughest market in America. You should not so easily dismiss his chances of success in Atlanta. Good content is good content and people his show targets in many cities seem to enjoy his show's style and content. I think he'll do well in ATL.

Why do you make posts if you don't know what you are talking about? What exactly do you know about the Atlanta market besides thinking it is Miami? Do you think he will be more popular than Kate McCarthy or even Jordan Graye? Doubt it?

Listen Radioman... it's obvious you've got some connection to Elvis' show from the way you've defended his show on radio boards in other markets. I live in NYC and have listened to Elvis enough to form an opinion. And "I'M" not in his demo? ha... ELVIS is NOT in his demo! The guy is 50 or older. You can't find his age anywhere... he's been in radio for 30 years! Yeah, he's a PERFECT fit for his demo. SHUT UP! I've heard a million shows like his... 4/5 or more people in studio talking all over each other...stunt guy.... pop culture... interviews blah blah blah... Look, he's established, he's safe, he gets good guests... lets see how he does in Atlanta.

Just a fan. He's in his 40's I believe. I never said he WAS the Demo. Nor is Conan O'Brien or Letterman or Brad Pitt. I said his show appealed to his demo. I follow the show. Each market has boards that say it will never work. Then it does. He wasn't supposed to be able to replace your guy Footy. A million shows like his aren't in multiple major markets and #1 in their demo. There are a handful. All I was saying was that just because someone is not live from a market, doesn't mean they won't do well. 22 year old females want good, entertaining content. Not necessarily talk about the best pizza in town. So save the "Shut Up" stuff. I commented on your description of his show which wasn't accurate. That's all. Have a good weekend.

Putting Duran on The Groove makes a lot of sense from a business standpoint. The Groove is a small signal with a relatively niche format. The station will never bill a great deal of money.

They have 2 fulltimers already, Tripp and Duncan (the PD). Based on the station's potential profit, there's no way they could afford a big local morning show or one as good as Elvis Duran. And Duran's show has proven itself in market after market.

This is definitely not the same as putting Bob & Tom on the huge 96.1 signal. That's a whole different story.

Mary Catherine Sneed made a ton of money with the "small signal" rimshot, 97.5. Enough to afford Ryan Cameron, Ludicris et al.
It's not always the size that counts. As the old blues song say, "it ain't the meat it's the motion."
The problem with this move is the same as all others most operators make in this market.....it is thinking "inside the box." Showbiz just can't be boiled down to a formula......it ain't math - it's emotion.
