Elvis Duran on WINK FM 96.9

From the News-Press:

NEW SHOWS DEBUT

Also this morning, a new show appears on 96.9 FM. It's hosted by Elvis Duran, a popular big-city radio host whose morning show has just gone into national syndication.

It's truly the end of local radio in Fort Myers.

I think the bigger story from this article as far as Fort Myers is concered...

Clear Channel Communications made some major staffing cuts across the country last week... Among those getting a pink slip - longtime program director and on-air personality Jimmy Roberts...

"You don't have a chance to say goodbye to your listeners," Roberts told me. "I wanted to thank all the people of Southwest Florida (for their support of the telethon) because we raised more than $1 million. That's pretty good."

He hosted the popular Kids with Cancer Radiothon for years.

It is always sad to see local hosts be taken off the air for some sort of syndicated garbage. Radio continues to sink further into a hole that it may never be able to climb back out of as far as I am concerned.

Looks like the WINK people are doing some cost cutting of their own as both Lite 93.7 and WINK 96.9 are part of that empire. They already had a syndicated morning show on Arrow 94.5 with Bob & Tom. I think that only leaves Oldies 92 as their only station with a local AM show. I hope they will leave that one alone as I find myself listening to that station most of the time anymore as they actually play music in the AM and it's not just a bunch of people sitting around talking and pretending that they are funny. Am I the only one that is getting tired of these morning shows?

It was sad to see Jimmy Roberts get the axe. He had been at WOLZ for many years and did many good deeds here with his fund raising. Shows just how much Cheap Channel really cares about the local community.

The way it's going right now it won't be long before most radio will be either syndicated/network stuff or all talk. And they wonder why the younger people don't listen to the radio. The radio giants have created their own mess as far as I am concerned and have no pity.

It is sad to see local radio hosts let go but don't generalize that all syndicate shows are garbage. Many are syndicated because they are great. Elvis Duran's show has been very successful in NY and Miami on Y100 for many years. It might be nice for Fort Meyers to have such a high budget show with huge available star power and talent that has proven itself in major markets including South Florida.

Shameful. One of the highlights of my yearly ventures over to Sanibel was always taking my Walkman, and boombox to make airchecks.

Nowadays I just take a preloaded iPod.

Yes..that's MUCH more important than good, profitable, compelling radio.

WINK FM puts out a good signal and even here in St. Petersburg, I used to listen to them in the car and at home (with just a set of rabbit ears for the fm band). Used to enjoy Alexander and Bennett in the mornings, but over the last several years; I've noticed that they have slipped as far as I was concerned.

I know at one time, they ran a promo; that announced : "WINK fm, from the Bay of Pigs to the Bay of Tampa!"

I can certainly see why more and more people (myself included) are using i-Pods and MP3 players for music more and more.

To be fair, many stations are shadows of their former selves; Oldies 108 WSRZ is another one of many; I was scanning the dial the other night and heard about 10 minutes of commercials and music airing over each other; I don't know how long this went on, but after 10 minutes of no one at the station (if in fact there was someone there) noticing, I turned the radio off and turned the weather radio on; more compelling content on that! (Remember when 1220 AM ran one of the NWS weather channels for awhile?!?)

That's just sad. I used to work at that station about 15 years ago and if something like that were to happen back then, we would have been hotlined immediately, even during the overnights! Today it seems no one one cares.

DRT, just so you know that Alexander is now doing the morning show on WINK's sister station Oldies 92.5 It's signal is not as strong as WINK so you probably can't get it up your way. Actually 92.5 is doing a pretty good job overall as an oldies station. A decent mix of songs. Could always use more I suppose but as most oldies stations go now a days they aren't bad all.

Bennet has left radio and is running a business in Ft Myers.

I did listen to Duran on WINK the other morning just to see what it was all about. I'm not impressed. As I stated earlier just a bunch of people sitting around talking and pretending that they are funny. Just more morning drive garbage.

SWFL,

Thanks for the heads up; next time I get south of Sarasota, I will make it a point to listen to 92.5; unfortunately we have a local (CBS owned) station (50,000 watts) at 92.5 with their tower in the Seminole area. (about 15 miles n.w. of where I am) so I wouldn't be able to receive WINK's sister station here even with an outdoor antenna. (which I don't have). One of these days I will have to get down that way to listen, I suppose by the time I get to Venice or North Port it should come in.

DRT, it appears that you will need to get down to the Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda are to pick up 92.5. Their tower is south of Ft Myers in the Bonita Springs area. I'm sure they had to keep their signal far enough south not to interfere witth the 92.5 up in the Tampa area.

Thanks SWFL,

I did a little research as well; looks as though even South Venice is probably not close enough for the 92.5 out of Bonita Springs, North Port... maybe if the conditions were right; looks as though after I cross the Peace River Bridge by the auditorium/civic center in Punta Gorda, the sailing should be smooth for decent reception.

Thanks again for letting me know about this station and the morning show; it will bring back some old memories hearing at least half of the Alexander/Bennet team!

Not sure if you are aware or not, but there are two fantastic local shows that are involved with a lot of local community stuff.

Big Mama and the Wild Bunch on B103.9

also

Zito and Garrett on New Rock 99X

Both waaay better options than the stuff that's piped in. Thanks

MJ

Thanks MJon. I usually don't listen to those stations as that is not my preference in music however I will agree that Zito and Garett and Big Mama have done some good things in the community. It is good to know there are still a few local programs left that care for the community.

Also Val and Scott Fish are still local at Gator Country 101.9 and of course good old Rick McGee is still around once again doing mornings at Cat Country 107.1.

I hope that the local shows that are left hang on are not pushed aside for more piped in garbage.

Why would you pick Elvis Duran when Simon Le Presley has a much better show?

Actually, this whole topic is making me Hungry Like A Houndog :p
