Elvis on Q102

Today was the first day for Elvis Duran on Q....Sounded pretty good!

Funny how he is back on the station that fired him 20 years ago :)

I thought it was pretty brutal... as I was driving into work today, from the time I approached the walt whitman bridge up until the toll both, he introduced about NINE members of his show...

I will not listen again... between Elvis and P&S, what do we have to listen to in the AM??? Without satellite that is.... I never thought I'd hope for O&A to come back to YSP but if thats my best option right now, then they can't get back on the air here soon enough... Mornings in Philly died for me the day Chris got fired...

remember men are not in the elvis duran show demo so we dont count

Exactly. Women can somehow listen to a bunch of people all talking at the same time and not get frustrated. Exhibit A: Take a listen to the opening segment of The View some time.

Did somebody say NINE?

Yet you kept on listening and kept track of how many people he introduced?

As much as I hate to see more syndication, which results in less jobs, you can not argue with the ratings The Elvis Duran Show brings in. And I'm sure they'll do well in Philly as they have in Miami.

Finally, An opinion with a brain behind it. One post says you want O and A back. Sure. Becuase THAT is teh kind of radio you like. That makes sense. Me too. But then you can't criticize the Elvis show for sounding exactly like it should. I heard the show and have heard it in NY. They talk to each other the same way O and A do. O and A talk all over each other much worse (See Jim Norton) and have just as many if not more characters. So does Howard. The show sounded nothing like The View. You're not their demo...but they are number one in many male demos anyway. Maybe listen to the show for a while, learn the players and then you might undertand why they have so many and what roles they play. If you don't want to listen, don't. But don't rip a show that you aren't supposed to like. None of your comments are on how well they do the show they are famous for. The show for the demo they are targeting. My wife loved them. I think they are good at what they do.

Yes, I did keep listening over my trip over the bridge... sorry, i pay attention to traffic as opposed to changing the channel.. i'd rather listen to a hacky dj morning zoo team, than crash on the bridge...

believe me, once i crossed the bridge, the kidd chris podcast resumed

BigDangDude

I was a huge Kidd fan too and i listened to this morning elvis duran though he was not my cup of tea. Then i listended to O&A online. I not a fan of Elvis or p&s but they do get monster ratings. I too hope O&A return to WYSP beats the same metallica, zeppellin, floyd song every 20 minutes. Philly radio died on 5/16/08. The Kidd Show podcast was awesome

Shoot.

I only clicked on this thread title because for a moment I thought maybe 102.1 was once again playing songs like "Return To Sender" and "Kentucky Rain" for Philadelphia.

Or, "Allison" or perhaps "Watching The Detectives"...

Oh well. Back to WLNG.com, HyLitRadio.com, RadioPhillyStyle, etc.

I do understand that all shows have alot of characters and what not, that's fine... and no, i'm not their demo, and if you see, i said that I dont really care too much for O&A anymore, but as opposed to this, I'll take O&A anyday.. thats all.. I understand that there are ALOT of people who like this kind of radio, and that's fine.. I dont, so I dont listen.. simple as that... and with the O&A, Stern, Kidd Chris show, they all had/have alot of different people, but they aren't all on at once..

Aren't you awfully defensive for someone who bashes the show?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but looking back to the ORIGINAL Z Morning Zoo... Z100 New York was it! The fact that this same format has brought in strong ratings since I was a kid says something about the whole "Zoo" concept.

Who can ever forget such characters as Mr. Leonard and John Bell? Yes the same John Bell that is on the air today. Talk about one amazing career in radio.

I can't help but think you're bashing the show because you're jealous that you are not on the air in New York, nevermind being syndicated in other markets.

The fact is Scott Shannon (again correct me if I'm wrong) came up with a brilliant cast of characters and a memorable name of a show "The Z Morning Zoo". And it has worked for what must be at least if not more than 20 years now.

I'm sad to see the Zoo title removed from the name of the show, but the fact is you have a little bit of almost every personality represented in the Elvis Duran Show, and it is the number of characters that make it work (creating that Zoo like atmosphere).

Plus, it's PG friendly... although I'm sure a lot parents today were having fun trying to explain the Kegel exercise today! :)

Truth is I actually still own a tape, yes a cassette of the original Z Morning Zoo that they sold in stores, which included bits, songs and even answering machine recordings.

And I feel somewhat "spoiled" to have had the opportunity to listen to such innovative radio at such a young age, and when Z100 went from worst to first. And were operating out of the swamps of The Meadowlands, but made you believe they were at "the top of the Empire State Building".

To me nothing will ever compare to Z100's morning show. As they used to say often imitated but never duplicated.

Although I have to say Opie and Anthony and the original "Homeless Shopping Spree" that took place in the stuffy suburbs of Short Hills was probably one of the funniest bits I have ever heard in my entire life and even made Z100 sit up and take notice.... especially since it took place on the night of Jingle Ball.

But to me to compare Opie and Anthony to Elvis Duran's Morning Show is like comparing apples to oranges. Truth is both generate a lot of listeners outside of their targeted demos and there's a reason why. Each show has a cast and crew that work together to create great radio.

And as O&A have always said "you hate us but still you keep listening"... which finally brings me back to the fact that you tuned in to the first day of The Elvis Duran Show on Q102. Do I have to say anymore?

Elvis does cheesy radio seems very fake. Philadelphia is going to back a fake... (ask Booker) its a shame Kidd chris is gone one of the few shows that was real. I am not in the demo this much i know but also having heard the original Z morning zoo and been spoiled on NY radio it is sad to see that Elvis has taken the zoo and made it stale. Come on wifi or no wifi how boring was tht .. they are sending there stunt guy out just to send him out that leads to boring bits like wifi or no wifi. You would think working together for so long in the number one market you would have a system for not talking over each other quite that often. You would also think with so many mind they should have tons of original ideas but no we get recycled radio bits. NY radio should be leading the way with fresh original radio instead The zoo as many great shows have become fat and are not putting the effort in anymore. and dont give me this he kicked ass in miami crap. He is up against a club DJ .. DJ laz does a horrible morning show

No, not jealous at all that i'm not on the air in NY, or anywhere for that matter... I'm not a radio DJ, nor do i have any desire to be... Their job is to make me laugh in the morning, which some shows do (kidd chris), some shows don't (elvis, preston & steve).. My job is a network administrator, not radio DJ, so no, I'm not jealous

and that's your opinion, and you are entitled to it, as I am of mine

That I did, you got me... My girlfriend mentioned he/they were starting today, so I turned it on for a segment, as I would with any new morning show, just to see how it sounded... my only thought when listening was, Dammit, I wish Kidd Chris was still on the air, I would love to hear him and the guys rip on this show.. because that would make me laugh

I think Elvis is a great show, Perfect for the demo, I personally listened to both booker and the elvis duran show and I think elvis is more entertaining then bookers show ever was. Kidd's show is gone so get off his wang, ...Thats radio its a cut-throat business,

HAHA... get off his wang...

I liked Booker, more so when he was in NY as opposed to here, but again, I wasn't his target audience..

I actually had an opportunity to observe the original Z Morning Zoo before Shannon left Z100. The concept was executed so well. Z100 went through many a bumpy road for a while, but finally regained momentum when Elvis found his groove.

Now that the show has found success in Miami, it's natural to fill in the gaps. Philadelphia is a perfect fit. Booker is a talent, but I always felt he was oddly placed on a CHR.

As somebody who has worked with CHR morning radio over the years, I have to say that the Elvis show is an amazing show. He has all bases covered when it comes to characters. Give the show a chance, and I am sure you will find at least one person that you can relate to. Sometimes, all it takes is one character to side with and you can become hooked. That isn't just for the Elvis show. It goes for all radio shows with multiple personalities.

For those who say that they want "real" radio. I hate to break it to you, but all of the shows you talk about are "fake" in some ways. If you had truly real radio, you would have chaos. Every great show uses phone screeners to make sure only the best callers get through, or on a rock show...the biggest idiots. Is that fake? In some ways, it is.

Often times fights are "planned". It's not just the "hacky" top 40 shows. Rock shows have a plan as well.

It's all about getting a reaction and target demos. It's just as good for a 25 year old guy to hate the Elvis show, as it is for a 25 year old woman to hate O&A. Hate equals passion. If your hate is there, you will tell others. So keep on hating Elvis. It can't hurt him.

It's entertaining to see people argue about morning radio shows. Listen to what you like and be done with it.

The Elvis show on q-102 is just another fm 'zoo' show. Since the station for the last couple weeks has put the show in am rush blows. I would say to P.D. Rick Vaughn why did you can Booker, etc.? How many of us
wont listen forcing the Clear Channel management and Vaughn to go with a live voice in the studio again.
I can see a great increase in P & S, Ben-FM and even Evans and Andi ratings just because who wants to
listen to a boring out-of-town radio show.

I feel sorry for the girls; Lisa and Jessie. By the way, is Jessie really Emily who came from Nebraska. Can anyone tell me.

You are obviously a friend of some of the staff and or you have no clue what just another ZOO format is if you think Elvis' show is just another Zoo format show. Try listening. It is much more adult than you give it credit for.
I guess the show is not for you...but then you go and name other stations that do not share audience with Q102. A Boring show? It's anything but that. I guess NYC and Miami enjoy boring radio. Based on how polished the show has sounded so far, I imagine that Philly will embrace them as well after a while.

Spread the word. Elvis isn't in Philly.

Yes, YOU spread the word. The majority of listeners will never know. If they do know, very few will care. As somebody who has worked with an out of town morning show via syndication, the general reaction is usually, "really? I wasn't sure if they were here or not. They are still _________"

The blank us filled with anything from funny, hilarious, boring, annoying, or in a best case scenario, "my favorite show."

Good radio is good radio.
