Spent the past week lolling on the beach at Destin and had the chance to listen to the latest radio offerings from Mobile/P'cola to PCB and everything in between. Quick observations. Fly sounds fine, but Z96 hasn't rolled over--this battle could go on for years. Same with Island & PFM--both sound good, but neither is overwhelming the other. Great Country battle going on in PCB--WAKT sounds sharp, but PAP ain't a pushover; same in Pensacola, where Cat & XBM match up very well. "My 107.3" sounds surprisingly good--upbeat 70s/80s pop AC/Oldies thing. Don't recall ever hearing anything quite like it before--not bad. Best on The Beach? 97.5/WABB. Gotta hand it to Bernie--they've thrown the kitchen sink at him, but he keeps pounding out great radio!

Would be interested in hearing more of your thoughts about FLY and Z96. Good, bad, whatever.
And I agree, WABB keeps on doin it even though I think Hot 104 does sound pretty good.
______________

Y'all sound good. You personally sound great, as usual--I remember you from Panama City days (how long ago was that)? I thought Z sounded pretty good, too. The main difference--to my ear (and I'm out of the demo) was Fly's focus on hip-hop and Z's broader pop content. My hunch is that you'll take more 12-17 from them immediately... split 18-24... and they'll retain more of their 25-34. Might be wrong, but listeners often don't respond as quickly as we'd like--and the younger ones respond more quickly than the older ones. So it might take a year or two to fully play out.

My god Panama City. Island 106 or 97X? And that was like 1997. LOL.

That's true, there is a very noticeable difference in our music. However I think our 18-34's will be very good and maybe even 18-49. Reason is because we are a rhythmic that plays hip hop as you said but we stay away from the "thuggier" stuff that BLX plays. I think we are very listenable to upper demos that wouldn't NORMALLY listen to a rhythmic.

Glad to hear your thoughts. Always like to hear opinions from those outside of the market looking in.
______________

It's not just a Great Mix of My Songs of the 70s and 80s. It has a Great morning show, too!

Kit and Meg give me just the right mix My news and My traffic. And, they always leave me with a smile on my face. Kit's topical humor is always on-target: it's lightly acerbic, smart, yet never anything that might embarrass me in front of my kids. Brilliant! And having that entertaining patter punctuated by great music from the 70s and 80s... I find myself almost afraid to change the station. I just don't want to miss anything!

And, Kit and Meg's Bargain of the Week? I don't plan my shopping until I hear it!

My 107.3... at my house, it's a station we can all agree on!

The Professor.

I can voice that promo and have it on the air for you within the hour!

Thanks, Kit!

So it's an AC by "any other name." Stopped in Seville Quarter for a beer and ran into an agency chick who told me CC was pitching 107.3 as "Oldies," to keep the ad bucks flowing: "Just a newer version of Kool." Truth is sort of a flexible thing in the sales arena. They did have a nice jump in the last book, though, so maybe they're onto something.

Re: Thanks, Kit!

Obviously a put-up post, but I didn't write it.

I agree with every word, of course.

Programming describes MY as "Classic AC." The new format has some affinity to Oldies, naturally: there are no currents, and Cool 107 was playing Seventies titles before we flipped it. We're also somewhat personality-driven, which was typical of successful Oldies formats.

I don't know what the Sellers their clients. The Classic AC label is an off-air descriptor -- it would be meaningless to listeners. Some of the Cool cume seems to have stayed with the new station, but they know it's quite different from what went on before.

Nice Job!

Hey, however it's described internally, it sounds great and seems to be working, if first-book returns are an indication. Are y'all the "beta" project for this approach or is Clear Channel using it in other markets? I recall an FM up in the Greenville/Spartanburg-Asheville market using the "My" flip as an AC, though I never heard enough of it to know if that was the model. Anyway, it looks like you're onto something. Way to go!
