EMF buys KMCQ

Just to clarify, KMCQ is now a C2 (492' @ 50KW equivalent) They were originally a C3 (328' @ 25kw) broadcasting from a tower east of Enumclaw when the move from The Dalles occurred in 2009. They upgraded in 2010 to C2 (and Cougar Mountain) when the 104.3/104.1 swap between CHHR and KAFE took place. THe Enumclaw transmitter was powered by a propane generator and the station would frequently leave the air when the tank ran out!

Its really amazing to think about what went in to making KMCQ what it is today. I never would have guessed that a move like that could ever be possible.

Did someone say "Steve"? No, I'm not RadioSteve. I am trolling with amusement here with nothing much to add. Things are happening in the market though.....there will be a format flip in about a year or so and it will likely be 103.7.

What happened to the old KMCQ transmitter site up on Radio Hill? I wonder if that might make a great translator site for somebody.

My question about 104.5 is why was dead air so frequent when they first came on? It seemed like every time there was a storm of some kind the station would be broadcasting nothing but dead air for sometimes a couple of days.

I think it was AQH that said something about how 103.7 does well in a certain demo. That being said, the pubic ratings information leaves a lot to be desired.

As a format listener of "The Mountain", it really wouldn't break my heart to see Entercom have to dump their rhythmic format. I doubt they would ever go back to AAA, but it would still be rather ironic.

It was a number of issues, including the TX site run 100% on generator and unreliable STL connectivity.

I'll let a younger person tackle the concept of "pubic ratings". :)

That's because the endgame was supposed to be a move-into the Seattle market and a sale, not listeners nor ratings at that time. Getting it on the air to meet the Commission's requirements as cheaply as possible was merely one step of many.

Thanks for the correction, WDAE. Somehow I kept thinking they were still a C3. My bad.

All of this to become a religious broadcaster. I still wonder if the people who moved in KMCQ actually made a profit. Does anyone know?

OK, I'm a little confused. KMCQ just applied to move to an adjacent tower with 6.7KW @ 400 meters HAAT non-directional. I was under the impression that they had to be directional, as part of the moving of various stations, particularly Vancouver BC. My first thought was that they applied for lower power to offset the directional penalty but not only is 6.7KW not less than a full Class C2, it's actually more! It should be 6.5. Any thoughts?

Yeah things are really slow here in PDX. The only thing I've really noticed down here is where has Jerimy Scott been the last couple of weeks? He hasn't been at 101.1. Back to Seattle, I was under the impression that the reason for the directional signal on KMCQ was because they were on Entercom's backup tower, which is directional. If I understand correctly, they're currently using the same tower as KNHC, which is also primarily a backup for Entercom's stations. I'm not sure which of the towers they're moving to, my guess is the one used by KRWM.

Most stations on Cougar are directional with a null to the east to mitigate multipath from signals bouncing off the cascades

Another KMCQ thread!

I bet KCMS is going to love this!

http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/92127/emf-acquires-104-5-kmcq-seattle/

So, will this be K-Love or another format of theirs?

I can see them getting the calls of KLSW (K-Love...Seattle, Washington)

Not to sound arrogant, but I though given EMF's call sign choices that they would select the KLSW calls (which were available) for 104.5MHz and saw online that they have indeed been chosen and are pending. Time for some good KoLeSaW eh, Bongwater?

Another station getting a change listed on the same FCC call-sign change page, that's also flipping to religious programming is 91.7 FM KXOT. They're getting the call sign KYFQ. (So sad what happened to KBTC-FM in the end).

You read EMF's mind! Maybe 104.5 does need to be flipped...I couldn't stand "Q-104.5." The good ol All Songs of the 60s and 70s format was incredible. Q104.5 was just like 800 other oldies stations. I still predict that KCMS will beat K-LOVE by a longshot for many months at least. Spirit 105.3 will always be the Christian leader in Seattle, in my opinion, and it has been for many many years.
