EMF buys KOKF

Appearantly, the K-Love/Air 1 bunch has bought KOKF 91 FM in Oklahoma City. I hope they don't change it to Air 1. 91 FM is a legend, groundbreaking Christian station done right and EMF would be better making Air 1 a KOKF simulcast than putting Air 1 on KOKF. I don't like the sound of this..EMF has taken down several local Christian stations in their time.

Sad thing is R&R's Daily Transactions:

"COMMENT: A $200,000 escrow deposit has already been made. A change in formats to Christian-themed programming is tied to EMF's purchase of KOKF.
"

HELLO! They where donig CHRISTIAN THEMED radio already... Sure it was not avalon or Michael W Smith each hour but it was CHRISTIAN already!! Lookat their website: http://www.kokf.com/ they where clearly Christian!

I have nothing against EMF (they bought the station fair and square) but its really heart breaking to see a locally own Christian CHR formated station trying to reach the lost future generation totally be wiped away to be reaplaced by a Mini Disc player with a 10 Second Legal ID and a Satellite Dish pulling in some fed from Rocklin California.

I'm sure whoever wrote that up for R&R probably wouldn't have said that if they didn't think that KOKF's current format is CHR/Pop. We know better, but it is a big shocker to some people that there is more than one format in Christian Music!<P ID="signature">______________

KOKF reported to R&R with all three of their playist C-CHR, C-Rock, and C-Rthymic, so it should have been obvious that 91 was a Christian format. But reporting three different formats was 91's problem, they tried to please too many people, when you flipped to 91 you were never sure what you were going to get. It could be Jeremy Camp followed by a no name rap group. They were in "constant Sharathon" these past few months, and were probably the only OKC station that didn't have automation. I still don't know how they survived up to this point on 3 cd players and 6 Mini Disc Players. The air staff had potential but when the station had the constant "buzzing" from the transmitter in the background, CD's skipped, spots didn't play, etc. 91's days were short lived when compared to the product of K-Love or The House. Just because it was Christian radio, didn't mean it had to be "cheap".

If you have the greatest message to tell, why not try to sound the best as possible?

91 FM sounded great last I heard it. Sad if they were having tech problems. Think about it this way. If 91 FM is live, local OKC people can call in for requests, prayer, or to profess their faith, with something out of Cali that may be voicetracked, how local for OKC can the new station be? At least 91 FM, whatever problems they have technically, have been there for OKC for years, and the new format will not hold the same audience. Air 1 and KLove are not willing to take the risks that KOKF took to reach the young people. Then, you'll hear KLove and Air 1 talking about how they must have donations to stay on the air after this four million purchase..until they buy another station somewhere else. It's an embarassment to Christian radio how these people operate.

I Agree 100%, I was never a big fan of 91's format, but without a doubt they targeted a demo that no other Christian station (that I know of) would ever hit. If you went to a concert you could meet the DJ's, they worked with churches all across OKC, and if you dropped by the studio they would let you say hey to someone on the air, they truly knew if was the listeners that kept them on the air. I hope a majority of 91 will go to the only local Christian station left in the market 89.7 The House, a little softer than 91 but still commercial free and LOCAL. They got a translator downtown at 99.7, and the 89.7 signal covers the north metro pretty good.

This is very sad news indeed. While I never heard this station OTA or online (except for the dance mixes which are streamed at the DJs own website) - I followed their playlist and their progress and always felt they were doing a great thing.
(Note: Dance mixes available at http://www.LiftedRadio.com/ . Recommended.)

It is nice that the area still has The House, but I must admit that The House is not as much of a CHR as I had hoped it would be when I first read about it.
They do have a poll on their homepage right now though, asking if they should go more rhythmic. I find it very encouraging that they are even asking the question. More stations should be asking their audiences the same thing.

It would be awfully nice if The House would give these DJs some airtime.
I doubt they'd give them the same airtime as KOKF (7pm Friday - 5am Saturday) but why not (at least) 12mid Friday - 2am Saturday?

Unless EMF will let them interrupt the satellite feed for a while (wishful thinking, I know).

There are some really great people at The House.

I wish them the best.

> Don't get your hopes up... With the other 100kW in Ponca City doing CHR and having their satellite FM freqencey and translators moving into OKC, I am sure EMF will choose K-Love as the A/C choice over bringing in Air-1 or leaving a great station alone....

Air1 is difinitely coming to OKC. You must not be aware that K-Love is already in OKC on KYLV 88.9 because saying EMF will bring K-Love to OKC when it is already there makes no sense. I am not trying to be mean but only pointly out your mistake. The only question is rather K-Love would move to 90.9 with air going to 88.9. But with 88.9 having a CP giving it about the same coverage area as 90.9 may mean K-Love stays on 88.9.

Also, you must not also be aware that EMF has already chosen to put air1 on low power stations in Enid and Stillwater where the hot AC 100kw station (KJTH) covers well. EMF must have done that thinking air1 would do better and that KJHT was more similiar to K-Love than air1. Which is the opposite as you said.

I don't get out the 'Alley' as much as I used to (with relatives in Wichita)....That gives a little more hope to having K-Love, Air-1 and The House hitting OKC with three pinpointed approaches... Glad to hear.... "Skip"

The fcc approved the sale on 4/5/2006 so it will probaly onlt be a couple of weeks now until air1 comes on.

When KOKF was streaming on the internet back in 2000, I listened to them alot. They were playing more variety than any other Christian music station was playing at the time. Then when the RIAA determined they had to have money every time a song was played, this bumped KOKF's internet feed off, and they never got it back. Now it's a shame if they were to fall to the "K-Love Empire," or even to Air 1 (as good as they are), because they don't take requests. This takes out the excitement in Christian radio. The special shows was what made KOKF great. If they take K-Love or Air 1, it will just sound mundane all the time.
