EMF CEO resigns

Personal experience and that of many, many friends.

That is a personal belief, and he has a right to it. And what he said is not what you put in quotation marks; he spoke of the formation of the family as a worthy career. Again, his belief and he is entitled to it.

Of course, topics like this are the fuel of conservative talk radio, so the subject will be amplified well beyond is narrow impact at the commencement and graduation ceremony at a relatively small college.

Actually, Osteen's rather odd tenets say that God favors in life those who are believers and that faith and prosperity can join under his ministry.

I watched a service and sermon of his one time, and found it to be borderline drivel with a lot of pomp and circumstance to emphasize his prosperity so that others might join his ranks.

No, EMF is in the "money enables our ministry" business. Same as a non-profit hospital or the Red Cross.
Butker referred to "Deadly Sin" and suggested that Women do not need careers. Yes, he is entitled to his beliefs. He is not entitled to pass judgement or make decisions for others. That's exactly what has been happening since Roe V Wade was overturned. That should be a private matter between the patient and doctor.

Hospitals and the Red Cross provide services. EMF wants money for something that Jesus said was free...

Where did Jesus say radio was free? Donations are voluntary. No subscription or password is required to hear the message.
The message has nothing to do with building a Radio Empire. People can discover whatever God they choose to believe without EMF. Spirituality is another issue that should be a private matter for folks to decide on their own terms...

That's what I said. No requirement to support EMF. People do it of their own free will.

That's partly why they love broadcast radio. It's free and open to everyone.

As soon as I listened to his speech I anticipated the adverse reaction. Although I would have used different words I didn't think he crossed the line with regard to a woman's role in life. Most women I've ever met take much greater pride in their families than in their careers (although I'm sure there are many exceptions as well).
I find that to be a generalization.

In my career in radio, right from when I built my first station at age 18, I had a woman in a top position. Some of the best managers and general managers I have know are women, such as Claudia Puig who ran the HBC / Univision cluster in Miami for decades and Michelle Hohman who ran both the UVN San Francisco and LA stations magnificantly.

And my wife? Almost as many years in radio as me and both a local TV anchor and radio personality and a national PD for one of the UVN radio networks.

In sales, I find women to be better on average at understanding client needs which leads to longer term relationships. Of my daughters, three have outside careers and one runs a household stunningly well.

But the music formats of the EMF stations are compatible with a wide range of Christian faiths and serve listeners who are not impressed with most contemporary music.

It's a choice. That is why radios have dials and computers have a mouse (or touchpad).

In the current marketplace, I applaud him for having the courage to use his freedom of speech to say exactly what he wanted to say. I don't think he meant that women should never have careers, but that it is of equal value to be a stay-at-home mom, raising a family and helping to raise good children.

They've been doing the morning show from that temporary facility since it opened.

Dan & Michelle were still in Rocklin until 2021 or 2022. Not sure about K-LOVE. AccessMore (The podcast platform) was the first in there I believe. I remember they rehired Rahny Taylor after iHeart flipped the station he was on in Milwaukee. They sent him down to Nashville to launch it. That was in 2019.

Prior to that they had morning shows based in other locations, but ended up back in Rocklin eventually.

Some context to add: Butker made his speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. It is a very, very conservative Roman Catholic college. It's entirely likely that he was playing to his audience and overdid it.

This is a good backgrounder:

In the AP article, this stood out to me:

The Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, one of the founding sponsors of Benedictine College, issued a statement Thursday criticizing Buter’s speech, contending it did not properly represent the college’s values.

“Instead of promoting unity in our church, our nation, and the world, his comments seem to have fostered division,” the statement said.

Now, how are Butker's remarks going to play in Kansas City, which isn't so far away? I suspect not well. It's never a good idea to alienate fans if you're in that kind of business.

Definitely. KOA picked up on it this morning and probably had a lighter touch on it than many other such stations would have had.

It's not like housing is easy to find in Franklin, TN, especially if you aren't making 6 figures.
Two other broadcasters with religious backgrounds have also relocated to Franklin TN, about 20 miles south of Nashville. Dave Ramsey has his giant complex there. And Family Radio has relocated from Oakland, California, to Franklin as well.

Using Google Streetview, I just looked at the Ramsey Solutions HQ, off Interstate 65, just south of Exit 61. Wow, like a Disneyland of media. Meanwhile Family Radio has a more modest but new office park location as well, just north of Exit 61. And as mentioned above, K-Love and Air 1 now do much of their radio shows and operations from Franklin as well.

Why has Franklin TN become the go-to place for Christian Radio?

Seems to me Ramsey has been in the area for at least 30 years.

In the above linked article, former EMF CEO Bill Reeves says he's been part of the Franklin community for 25 years.

That's where all the Christian music, publishing etc has consolidated around. Basically becoming the Christian Media Hollywood where everyone is based making it easier for all to do business with one another.

That didn't happen until 2020 according to this article
The real point is that K-Love's morning show was in Indianapolis, not Rocklin, prior to moving to Tennessee. They moved some of their shows, including the morning show, and I think a few of their weekenders to Indianapolis in 2009.

IIRC The State Of Franklin (East Tennessee) almost became a state in the Mid 1780's. It was a convoluted story with NC land speculators eventually (with help of the North Carolina State government) grabbing the eastern Tennessee counties bordering NC. Ben Franklin was still alive but never officially part of the state movement. Some folks claim the state could still come about. I seriously doubt Tennessee would allow it.

If you are ever in Franklin get on I 65 towards Nashville and you will see WSM's (650) AM Tower.

The name Franklin can have other meanings

Tennessee has no state income tax. Moving from Indiana less snow to shovel too. Last time I checked cost of living a lot less in Tennessee than California too.

Air1's morning show was there for awhile if I remember right, but they went back to doing mornings from Rocklin. Not sure when that was.

When Jon Rivers did mornings on K-LOVE, they were in Texas at his studio.

EMF has still done some pretty notable acquisitions in the past year. They bought (the former) WTSS Buffalo and (the former) WLFP Memphis, the Houston rimshot from Cox, the SC cluster from Salem, as well as the Salem stations in Nashville (which they needed), and Honolulu. But I think we will see a slower pace of expansion from them going forward as their footprint gets closer to being built out.
