Emily Rooney's "Beat The Press" Takes on WRKO

C

Casablanca

Guest
In a stinging repute to WRKO's action to fire the entire WRKO news staff, Emily Rooney and the panel of "Beat The Press" took on the management and especially Julie Kahn on its Friday night segment.

There was also a taped piece with Rod Fritz who said they were each call in to Julie Kahn's office separately and fired one by one. Rod Fritz still looked a little shell shocked. Who wouldn't be. I hope WBZ Radio will hire Rod immediately or maybe WTTK.

Guess Julie Kahn was just being a "good German" - you know those who knew the Holocast was going on in Germany and either freely participated for the good of the Motherland or just pretended they knew nothing.

Yup, Julie Kahn is another 'good German'.

The panel included Joe Sciacca and the former Phoenix columnist and now Northeastern professor, Kennedy.

They all agreed that the action made no sense. Moreover, they all believed that a strong local news component is an essential part to any strong local talk station. From my own experience, I can say that a strong local news component is an essential part to strong local radio. Can't count the number of times at WRKO that we moved on a local news item that was breaking right into the talk format.

The Beat The Press panel all agreed that WRKO must be in trouble and this firing of the news staff and the firing of John DePetro are both part of some larger corporate plan.

In the end they said WRKO will find they have to return to a strong local news component [ Shadow News comes out of Phoenix and is fed locally across the country] or the entire station will fail.

Guess what? WRKO has failed already. Talk listeners are news junkies. They are going to turn to WBZ or even WTKK for new on the hour. Once those stations have captured the listener WRKO has lost them.

Welcome to the SS Entercom Titanic, aka WRKO.

funny how everybody agrees!! julie's body count is already 9 at least!!

How will this effect DePetro's "lawsuit", if he tries to say his firing was unjustified? The Herald called him "ratings challenged" while everyone agrees the news staff was the best element the station had in place.

I saw the 12+ numbers on radio sites before Kahn took over the station and changed the morning and evening shows around. They were much higher, I remember a 5.2 or something like that a couple years ago and that's with whipping boys miller and depetro still at the station. We can quibble about hosts but I listen to four stations, tkk, rko, eei and npr. I didn't listen to bz, now I have to if I want news. This is her mess.

so when's Emily's next appearance on WTKK? :D

it was a good treatment, though... to paraphrase Dan Kennedy (I really miss his Phoenix column), it's a disgrace...

Thta's not a paraphrase...it's EXACTLY what he said.

no arguments on wrko's mess, but emily should do the right thing as a journalist and
run a disclaimer every time she talks about 'rko. she officially goes on jay's payroll in 40 days.

The Metro/Shadow wire service is based in Phoenix. The people on the air on WRKO are based in Boston and surely writing their own local news.

Everyone is railing on this being such a horrible decision but in the next breath agreeing that WRKO is in very bad shape. If the station is losing money and ratings simultaneously, what sense does it make to drop a half-million dollars into a news staff? We all agree that Rod, Listo, and the gang are top-notch news talents but the way to RKO's salvation (if there is one) is not through a news staff on a talk station. It is through better talk show hosts and better talk show topics. The news staff is complementary to that, not a replacement for it.

It'd be nice if it were still the heyday of radio and every little station had its own 10-person news staff. But with the internet, cable TV, wireless technology, and satellite radio, people simply don't need radio for their news. Why wait till the top of the hour when I can just whip out my blackberry and know precisely what I want to, WHEN I want to.

This board seems primarily composed of old timers who remember the way it was and are refusing to accept the way it is now. Trust me, if the WRKO news department made a dime for that station they'd all still be on the air. As content as everyone is to lose other people's money for the sake of their outdated and idealistic notion of what is right, those who have to watch the bottom line simply don't share the same luxury.

If it were Casablanca's $500,000 dollars paying for that news department, they would have been gone long ago.

'rko managers must be worried david's reading this board

Sure. Everyone knows David Field has nothing better to do with his time than read this board. Right.

The most gifted comedy writer in the world couldn't make up the stuff that gets posted on this board in a million years.

>>>nothing better to do with his time than read this board.

you're on it as much as anybody

he'd be a fool not to read this board. If yer in the business you want to check out what is written on public forums, especially if it involves your advertisers.

He needs to avoid this board because the hysterical laughter resulting from the rantings of the resident WRKO-bashers here would leave him unable to actually get any work done.

Your premise is that anyone who reads this board is supposed to take seriously posters who describe two of his managers as "human excrement" because they made a business decision, who think radio is still mired in the 1950s and who think that even though they've never worked in radio a day in their lives they know how to program a station that human beings would actually listen to. If you actually understood a hundredth of what you think you do, you'd realize that this goes on all the time. After all, those who can, do, and those who can't...well, you know the rest.

you get meaner by the post, and jason's never programmed a non-sports station, ever...

Guilty as charged. It's called "taking the WRKO-bashers down a peg." Gawd, you people are so easy to lampoon. Reaching conclusions unsupported by facts or evidence and just plain gutter-level name-calling is as common as falling leaves in the autumn around here. With all the fecal matter being hurled at WRKO management from this board, the Kerry Healey syndrome has kicked in. You're actually generating sympathy for them, when they haven't factually earned it.

Jason IS programming a non-sports station (at least until next spring).

>>>Jason IS programming a non-sports station (at least until next spring).

without any experience...

Maybe the name of the poster should be "Dumber Than A Box Of Jason", oh well, this Friday will be the 24th, not the 13th...

>>>Maybe the name of the poster should be "Dumber Than A Box Of Jason"

he's not too bright, he thought "*** matt" was a racial slur, told papers that, people were laughing at him....

Prove it. Quote the post where I said that.

I'm waiting.

You just confirmed what I figured out long ago...you folks just sit around and make things up. No facts, no evidence, just fantasies and hatred.
