Boston Radio Watch's latest edition (www.bostonradiowatch.com) says that Emily Rooney, host of WGBH-TV (2)'s Greater Boston (M-F 7:00PM) panel show, which covers local and national media each Friday in a half-hour edition subtitled "Beat the Press," has signed up to do regular appearances on Greater Media's WTKK 96.9's reincarnated (PM drive) Jay Severin (call-in) Show. Rooney will continue at WGBH both as News Director and as host of Greater Boston. Because Beat the Press covers Boston talk radio from time to time, does Rooney's new role at 96.9 constitute a conflict of interest? Sure, when appropriate, she may alert listeners to her role at 96.9, but she is the MODERATOR of a weekly panel show on the media on supposedly neutral public TV. I thought her loyalties were to herself, to her viewers, and to WGBH (which is clearly part of the media). I don't think her having a regular slot on WTKK--especially on a show hosted by someone as biased as Severin (and someone whose reputation is as sullied as that of "Peabody Award winner" Severino) can help to burnish her image. I'm sure Rooney is going to enjoy the extra $$$, but I think she (and by inference, WGBH) will suffer in the minds of public-TV viewers.
