Emmis buying Disney Radio

Hi,

I found an article about Emmis buying all of the Disney radio stations. What will emmis do with 94.7? Format change since 97.9 was to battle with 94.7?
From Billboard Radio Monitor Website:

Three Bids For Disney's Radio Group
July 22, 2005
By Sven Philipp

The Walt Disney Company has received three bids for its radio network, Financial Times reported Thursday (July 21).

Emmis Communications, Entercom and Citadel have made offers for the radio group, which includes 71 stations - among them, ABC News Radio and ESPN Sports Radio - and is said to be worth between $1.5 billion and $1.75 billion.

Disney has not made a decision to sell the assets.

Amid speculation over the future of its radio business, Disney has considered a financial maneuver that would infuse the company with new cash and involve a tax-free spin-off to Disney shareholders.

As reported, Emmis Communications is in the process of selling its TV division, which includes 16 stations.

If emmis buys these stations, Emmis will kill off the zone faster then you can say q101

First off, unless this is confirmed, Entercom and Citadel were making bids as well. Second, ABC hasn't committed to a sale yet, to my knowledge anyway. As soon as they do, they'll have to announce it since they're a public company.

Interesting, I like where this may head. Might be good news for the oldies format, but don't tell me we're going to lose AM 1300?!
Edited by alex on 07/26/05 10:42 PM.

HOT 94.7 blazing Hip-hop and R&B.. WLS #1 FOR News & Talk .. Classic Radio 1300 Yup I can see it now.. :)

I see the Zone gone should Emmis buyout ABC Radio, which I will agree from an earlier post. I could see hip-hop on 94.7 since they have Hot 97 in New York. It would likely put fierce competition an already don't know which direction Power 92. As for the WLS calls, that's up to ABC whether the call letters can stay on 890. Classic Radio, if referring to oldies might be a possibility for 1300, but I don't know what else could be an option for an AM station that is mainly heard in the near south suburbs, near northern suburbs and parts of Chicago at night. Also I don't think Emmis has ever done any type of oldies on any of their stations. They don't seem to do well with Hot AC that they dumped Hot AC WENS in Indianapolis for Hank (a country variety type station).

Zelen...this would be interesting....considering a bunch of Q101 alums are at the Zone. Would they let Sludge, Whip, Freak, Van Osdol stay....or would Q101 smile at them and say no thanks, but your services are no longer needed here. :-O
______________

Emmis knows, that Hip Hop will only work in certain markets. You have to have more facts to actually see it surface.

Story has it Disney will retain stations like WLS and all Radio Disney outlets. SMART move.

1 markets success of a format does not dictate it company wide.
______________

I can hear the Emmis Executives talking now..."We can't tell you enough, Mr. Matthews, how happy we are that Mancow talked us into buying Disney's radio properties so that we can give you your very own radio station...WACK-FM!"

In chicago its only one hip-hop station and one want-a-be hip-hop station.. WGCI is the one and b96 is the want to be... Power92 is just boot leg college radio..LOL

The story I heard is ABC will retain all Radio Disney and
all the ESPN outlets, so that could mean only 94.7 would
be on the chopping block here. Also consider the lack of
sentimentality on the part of the major conglomerates and
you could see ABC giving up AM890, even with the classic
call letters?
