EMMIS - NEW VP/GM IN NEW YORK

Alex Cameron rises from Director of Sales to VP/GM of the cluster (Hot 97, 98.7 Kiss, 101.9 RXP). Dan Halyburton leaves to form "Halyburton Connected," a tech/media enterprise in Dallas.

Now what?

And Emmis is selling the corporate jet to raise ca$h. Jeff Smulyan gets to learn how to fly in coach.

What next?

Dan had quite a run during his tenure at Emmis/New York.

The cluster's perennial cash cow, CD101.9, was driven into the ground.

The succeeding format, 101.9 RXP, was created under the mistaken, imbecilic, and naive belief that all rock stations succeed under the PPM system. What Halyburton and his chums didn't realize is that it's not rock stations that thrive under PPM, it's strong, intelligently executed, and quality rock stations that thrive under PPM.

One could argue that Emmis' troubles in NYC were the result of a deteriorating economy, but that wouldn't be accurate: Halyburton came on board in '06 and the cluster began its slow ride to failure under his watch.

It was his job as GM to bang the heads of the incompetents and either straighten them out or get rid of them. He did neither. Instead, he kept the hacks happy and didn't rock the boat. Now he's out of a gig, RXP is down and almost out, and Emmis' other two stations are bleeding cash.

Nice work, Dan-o. And best of luck with Halyburton Connected, your new media technology company, which "will work with both new and traditional media to help harness technology to enhance profits and build more powerful brands."

(Yeesh. Sounds like some inane dot-com era hokum to me...)
