Emmis officially gets the Rick Dees Bonehead award

The Tom Taylor newsletter from today revealed something that even Smulyan and Cummings should have been aware of, but these two gringos couldn't even run a taco stand, much less figure out Hispanics and their culture. As Mr Taylor points out in a newsletter, 2nd generation Latinos/Latinas may grow up listening to KPWR/KIIS and such, BUT when they get married they want their kids to be bilingual! This means the parents will listen to Pilon and KLVE, but forsake adult outlets that are english language like KMVN! Why? Simple, they want their kids to know about their culture and you ain't getting that by listening to a old white guy trying to latinize his name.

Ricardo Diaz, not only are the Latinos not tuning in because they prefer their Pilon, but they're horrified that you're trying to be Mexican. You are making a complete a!! of yourself.

That is why Bianco500 gives you the Bonehead award.

Bonehead Bonehead Bonehead, you are such a Bonehead, Bonehead Bonehead Bonehead, BONNNNNEEEHHHHEEEAAADD!

I would have given the award to Liggins, Hughes, and her boyfriend Majors, but Ricardo Diaz totally insulted Los Angeles more then they did.

Cultural reversion, which is the term for the process you describe, is nowhere nearly as prevalent as you state. The process is higher in Miami, where Hispanics control the local economy, than places like New York City, where Spanish is less perceived as needed by those of Puerto Rican heritage. In the Southwest, the process exists to some extent in areas where Spanish is dominant within big cities and can be said to have critical, self sustaining, mass. It's not universal, however, and can not be blamed for the KMVN situation.

When you say Emmis can not figure out Hispanic culture, you are wrong. In 2000, Emmis launched a new FM format in Buenos Aires, a city much larger than LA, and with more competitors. The format, well researched, was unique at the time and went to number one in one book (30 days) and is still there after 8 years. Rick and his group must have known something about the market to do what had never been done in that over radioed market in so short a time.

Ah, "pilón" in Mexico means "a little extra" like getting an extra tomato when you buy a bunch at the market. Piolín is the radio personality of Eddie Sotelo.

In the mid-80s, current USC play-by-play announcer Pete Arbogast became Pete Hernandez for the sole purpose of landing the sports reporting gig at KHJ.

The late, great Herald-Examiner caught him and called him on it. He just sheepishly said that he stopped doing that. No explanation or apology. KHJ management was totally silent.

I think there wasn't much outrage due to the low ratings of KHJ at the time.

I think Pete Arbogast's sham was far worse than anything Rick Dees has done. At least Dees has a long record of being Latino-friendly. Arbogast showed contempt for Hispanics by pretending to be one.

Oh give me a break. Ricardo Diaz? What, are you mad you didn't think of it first? The "Ricardo Diaz" thing is a joke man. Lighten up.
