Empress Julie: WRKO loses big with no Howie

Howie has compared his situation with Entercom to
indentured servitude. Well as far as he’s concerned
he “ain’t gonna work on Julie’s farm no more”,
as Dylan would say...

>>In a court affidavit, Entercom Boston Vice President Julie Kahn said she has “no doubt that Entercom will lose substantial . . . money” if Carr leaves WRKO. Kahn said some businesses have told Entercom they won’t continue to advertise with WRKO “in light of the publicity indicating that Mr. Carr was or might be moving to WTKK.”

http://bostonherald.com/news/regional/general/view.bg?articleid=1034434

Doesn't that idiot joooooooooooolie realize how bad this looks for RKO? Bad bad bad publicity,,,,why doesn't she just let Carr go - be gracious about it, you get more bees with honey joooooooooooooooolie.......

from the WRKO Talk Insiders newsletter:

>>Red Sox Roll to the Playoffs on WRKO! Tune into all the playoff action on the flagship station of the Boston Red Sox, AM 680 WRKO! Remember tomorrow is your last day to win Red Sox tickets on Finneran’s Forum weekdays 6-10a.

Note: if it's like it's been in the regular season, Wed. games are actually on WEEI. Or is WRKO carrying them on
that night as well? WEEI doesn't come in as well at my workplace.

Only mention of Howie is The Howie Carr Poll

Brian Maloney finds another Boston mag. piece (daily updates) which trashes Howie AND his listeners, etc.
Brian feels Boston mag is a bunch of elites who don't want to have (conservative) talk radio succeed here.

Maloney:
>>I don't care what Kahn says in Entercom's court filing about Howie's value, they are trying to win the case. They would drop him in Boston Harbor tied to a concrete block if they could get away with it.

my reply to the Boston piece:

I've been told a bigwig at Boston magazine
is married to Julie Kahn and Julie has said in
a court affadavit that the station would lose
many advertisers if Howie bolted to WTKK.
So this is how her husband's publication
treats him? A station that will truly tank
if he leaves?

You want elite radio for the hacks and
cronies, you got it, folks. Look for
the ratings to go WAY down.

And these people you trash, the Howie
listeners: they must have money to spend.
How can two radio stations each be willing to spend so much to retain Howie? Because he
brings in the listeners and the ad
dollars.

ha--are the folks at the 'RKO site trying to tell me something? right now the "oddly enough" type of
news story on Howie's page is about an Illinois road crew that painted over a dead raccoon
in the middle of the road
(see my screen name :) ^ ( . . ) ^

Sour, sour, sour grapes. And, biased media coverage to boot. Personally, I can't WAIT for this woman to be unceremoniously fired for being the incompetent hack that she is. She has run a previously fine station into the ground and has a lousy track record with all of the other stations in the cluster. I've worked with people who are like her and it never fails to impress me how long they can last in this industry.

Just imagine how things would be had someone else ended up with the Red Sox too. Then they would have NO successful stations in Boston.

Sooner or later, it will catch up with her. In the meantime, what a mess.

Was that first Boston mag. piece written/published before the news of Howie's "benching", etc.? The
second, though, is more recent. But agreed about Empress Kahn and Hokey Wolfe (A Hanna
Barbera Carr-toon) running the place into the ground. All informercial radio...and the Red Sox...
coming soon.

It's true and it was on Drudge too! It involved an Illinois DOT road crew and laziness.

Nonetheless, I would recommend you to skip Chicago for a little while - until the paint dries! ;)

How did Julie "The Executioner" Kahn get to her position. Short skirts being a radio time saleshawker or does she actually have a degree in communications and any production experience?

consdiering how howie and his paper have been going after mass. judges on regular basis, he probably won't find a judge anywhwere in this state sympathetic enough to 'reconsider' the judgement against him...maybe he should ask for his case to be moved to brazil or dominican republic if he wants a shot at favorable judgement....no one is going overturn the decision, not even an appeals court. the judge pretty much left it up to him and entercom to work out a buyout. seeking relief from the court system is a waste of time as he's about to find out. he's got no choice but to deal with entercom if he ever wants to work in boston again.

good point, radiodouble. Howie can find himself the next peter blute because RKO made him. Do you really think people read the Herald column? If you've heard his show you know the contents of the column.

Carr has lots of money, but no real reputation in the biz nationally. He doesn't have the stuff to be a star in Vermont or New Mexico. He's a one-note-Charlie and that seems to be what WRKO wants these days.

Finneran was OK this morning but the babbling babe was a bit much so I tuned out.

He talks about more than just what's in the column. People do read it, which is why he's been there for
so long. And he'll take pols to task no matter white their party: today, it's Jane Swift.

He has some reputation in the biz nationally--in terms of talk radio he's in Talkers Heavy 100. I think
he blew a big chance by not doing fill ins for Rush (I wonder if Howie making fun of Rush's oxy use
may have cost him that? or prob just that he's too provincial). Had Howie done fill ins for the likes
of Rush (and then have someone else do HIS show) he could make himself better known. But he
has done more than a few appearances on national TV:
C-SPAN hawking his book
Rita "Sucrets" Cosby
O'Reilly
Fox Mornings (FNC) etc

Who was the babbling babe, Wendy Murphy?

He can be a star in Vermont maybe--and has been carried in Burlington and also the
Upper Valley (WRJ area via WNTK, etc)
Far from being a one note Charlie: politics, hacks, poo-poohing global warming, immigration,
the war, the Presidential race, pop culture, the media, funny stories of the day (like
Taser Boy) etc. The one note Charlies or one note Charlenes are the ones who say he's
doing nothing but hacks, hacks, hacks.

As to Julie "The Executioner's education may I remind the poster that George "Forest Gump" Bush got better grades at Yale than John Forbes Kerry.
Kahn's failures are noted and broadcast across WRKO broadcasting day. Just look at the morning and mid morning disaster of long standing.

Similar to a badly manage baseball club Kahn has no farm team and no back-ups or strong closers only minor leaguers.

Julie Kahn should go back to selling "spots". Her real accomplishments seem to be in quickies of :30 and 60's and a few :10's.

How did Julie "The Executioner" Kahn get to her position.

For one, exceptional performance, especially in sports sales and marketing.

Short skirts being a radio time saleshawker

Jeepers, if a conservative talk host said that on-air, some of the more sanctimonious nitwits on this board would be on the phone to the FCC.

or does she actually have a degree in communications and any production experience?

What's nice about radio is that it is largely a meritocracy. If you can do it, it doesn't matter where you went to school, and if you can't do it, where you went to school won't save you.

If you perform, you can dodge a bullet or two, but, if your presence is considered inconsequential to the success of a station, one misstep and you're on the sidewalk.

It's a cruel calculus.

He talks about more than just what's in the column. People do read it, which is why he's been there for

I once read that his column is/was the second most popular feature (not counting the sports section) in the paper, just behind The Inside Track.

And he'll take pols to task no matter white their party: today, it's Jane Swift.

Yikes, now that's hard hitting reportage. Beating up on Jane Swift? What's next, an expose on David Scondras? Bill Weld's drinking habits?

He has some reputation in the biz nationally--

With those in the biz who are paid to follow such things. He's an unknown to the general public, as are 99% of local talk hosts.

in terms of talk radio he's in Talkers Heavy 100.

Talkers Magazine? Are you kidding? Com'mon, Rac, get real. There are precisely 252 people who care about the Heavy 100; you, Michael Harrison, the twenty prominent national hosts, the 80 regional obscurities, and the 150 also-rans who are wondering how many ads they have to buy in the magazine to make the big list.

I think he blew a big chance by not doing fill ins for Rush (I wonder if Howie making fun of Rush's oxy use
may have cost him that? or prob just that he's too provincial).

Or, perhaps, because, as someone posted elsewhere, "He tried to do national but it just didn't work." In fact, I think it was you.

He can be a star in Vermont maybe.

Today, the Northeast Kingdom...tomorrow Fort Kent...Dixville Notch......New York City......

IIRC, when they tried to charge real money for his show, affiliates started jumping ship like they'd just taken a torpedo in the engine room.

Far from being a one note Charlie: politics, hacks, poo-poohing global warming, immigration,

Actually, a lot of folks, like me, enjoy his show, but we don't confuse it with meaningful political or social commentary.
Howie does the 'death pool', 'songs you love to hate', and 'worst beer you ever drank', because that's what he does. Nobody admits that they listen for the lightweight stuff, but if it wasn't for the lightweight stuff, nobody would listen.

TSB

And well should it be so popular!

Jane Swift is an easy target, of course. She was a whale of an acting governor. And a Republican,
so Howie isn't just one-note on Dems. (Peter Blute & Sandy Tennant's 3 hour tour on the Nautilus
comes to mind too...)

>>IIRC, when they tried to charge real money for his show, affiliates started jumping ship like they'd just taken a torpedo in the engine room.

But they came back after Entercom realized they'd made a mistake in boosting the fees.

It doesn't have to be heavy hitting talk. It's entertaining. For hard hitting
exposes on Darfur, go to NPR.

listening to howie is like having the same cereal for breakfast every single day, year after year.
it's boring, just like his radio audience.
