ENCO D. A. D.

Anybody have any experience operating ENCO D. A. D. from a remote location by using something like "Go To My PC"? And also, does anyone have any opinions on the possibility of picking up some type of virus in the process or unwanted intrusion?

I have not tried it with ENCO, but "Go To My PC" works fine with both Raduga and Zara Studio (the pay version of Zara.) It should also work fine with the free version. I realize they are not the same thing, but they are running on a PC and "Go To My PC" is an admirable (and safe) way to remote control anything you can access from your desktop

I say this because at one time we used VNC for this function. VNC is a great program, but we got hacked BIG TIME while using it. The automation computer started randomly opening hundreds of web pages, some of which had audio attached. Of course the computer tried to play that audio on the air, which was not good.

When I finally got the web pages to stop opening, I came down to a black DOS screen that said "Greetings from the Lizard!"

I'm sure there are ways to secure VNC, but this was behind two firewalls, and someone still got in. The cheapest and simplest cure (after cleaning out the computer) was to switch to "Go To My PC." That was several years ago. I haven't looked back, and have had no more hacking problems.

I'll also mention that a lot of people like LogMeIn as well. Evidentially, it has similar security measures. Why not download the demo version and see if it meets your needs?

How complicated do you need to get with "operating" DAD ? The DAD API allows for commands to be sent over IP, so if you only needed DCLs like PBK1 SUPERPLAY and mode toggles and a couple of MiniArray starts, then this could be achived with a simple Visual Basic application with a couple of buttons. I think the DAD port is 4444 so providing that is open on your router/firewall, you can send valid DCL triggers back to the studio workstation.

I've wrote a utility that does that but probably not exactly ideal for your needs: http://www.charliedavy.co.uk/software.php#DADMAN

Charlie...

What I want to be able to do is have our PD be able to solve any problems which may come up during unattended operations.
Tnx.

Right'o... Sounds like you just want a remote-desktop solution (of which there are many). For work I have used Radmin and for play (ie: free) then UltraVNC is fairly good and supports additional monitors.

Ultra VNC can be locked down really good. Even using MS Domain Login.
Don't have a server running without a password!!!

Also use something like Juniper to tunnel through the firewall.

Been told opening a port just let your remote desktop through is real trouble. That's how GoToMyPC (and others like it) can open a path for the bad guys into your LAN.

I use UltraVNC on everything and have done so for years with no trouble. It has great security and a small memory footprint. With the mirror/hook video driver installed, it is fast and doesn't use much CPU.
