End of an era for WKAQ-AM?

I heard first on Seijo's program on Radio Isla's audio stream, and confirmed it in the Radio Revista forum.

Univision Radio is overhauling the news format at Puerto Rico's oldest radio station, and thus, it has let go of 15 employees, some of which were long time veterans of the medium.

I won't get into an argument on whether it's good or bad. Enough snarkiness about it abounds at the Radio Revista forum. (Which is why I politely declined Señor Gleason's invitation to join it. Those people scare me. )

I say that it is the end of an era because I used to listen a lot to WKAQ's all-news format when I was in college in San Juan during the late 1980's/early 90's. That format started in.. 1978 I believe?

Though they weren't the first all news station in Latin America. That honor belongs to Cuba's original Radio Reloj,
from which Radio El Mundo borrowed the Radio Reloj name for their newscasts.

Doble U-K-A-Q
Radio Relooooooooooj
tatatataaaan tan taaaaaaaaan

God, I sound like a viejo. :p

Ah well, like Bob Dylan sings: "The times they are a-changin' "

Good luck and Godspeed to the 15 former WKAQ-AM employees. May they, especially Mr. Herminio Quintana, find new work in other stations.

What would Diplo say?

The morning news started in the 50's sometime. In 1968, the Top 40 format debuted after 9 AM, consulted by Mike Joseph. In around 1978 it went all-news, with the music going to KQ-105. In the early 90's, the news was pushed back to just 6-9 AM and talk was put on after 9 AM.

The only change last week was to make the morning show more talk and commentary and less of a "reading of the newspaper" Leading talk staitons from Argentina to Colombia have already done that with great success.

I don't doubt that for a second (or a third or a fourth for that matter) *rimshot* ;D

It's just me being nostalgic, 's all. Sometimes I even wish I was alive during the 50's so I could hear (and see in the case of TV) how it was done back them. I'm such a nerd.

So, will the new approach sound like Rolando Becerra's "Hoy" show on weekday mornings on KLAT 1010/KFLC 1270 here in Texas? I assume there are no plans to bring any of the Radiocadena Univision shows to Puerto Rico (Doctora Isabel, Julie Stav, etc)

More like "Cada Mañana" on Radio 10, Bs. As.

Do they stream?

It took a double take to realize that meant Buenos Aires

And, thanks for replying ;D
